AES - 01 Jun 2008 16:27 GMT Anyone have any suggestions on where one might purchase a legitimate, new, preferably still in shrink-wrap and registerable copy of MS Office 2004 or 2007 versions? (NOT including eBay . . . )

Anyway, Google, as usual, is your friend. A search on "Microsoft Office 2004" turned up several vendors, including Amazon.com.

(BTW, the two versions I think you're referring to are 2004 and 2008).
Anyway...there's a student/teacher edition that's significantly cheaper ($145.00, I think) than anything else out there. Provided you qualify, of course....

Provided you qualify, > of course.... Qualifying for the Student/Teacher version of Office 2004 entailed ordering it from any vendor I'm aware of or taking it from the shelf of a retail store and paying for it. Despite the name, there was never a requirement to provide academic credentials to buy it, unlike the academic versions of, say, Adobe products.
As for Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for Macintosh, Microsoft now calls it the "Home and Student" version. They're both the current versions for the respective platforms, so whether the OP meant 2007 or 2008, they're both readily available.

Provided you qualify, > of course.... Sorry. I'm talking a "low end" Mac version here -- and making this inquiry because we currently have just one copy of Office Mac 2004 which is shared for very infrequent use by two users in an Airported household. At any given time only one of us is likely to want to use it; but if the other user has left their copy running, Office detects this over the Airport LAN and blocks opening the other copy.
[In fact, I think if one user has just left Word open, the other user can't even open Excel or PowerPoint.]
So, we're willing to pay the freight for a low-cost second copy. We're eligible for the academic price -- but we'd like to get the 2004 version primarily because neither of use wants to have to adapt to any newer or updated interface changes in any of these three apps, and secondarily because I thought I read some criticisms of Word 2008 vs earlier version.

> and making this > inquiry because we currently have just one copy of Office Mac 2004 [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > [In fact, I think if one user has just left Word open, the other user > can't even open Excel or PowerPoint.] That's because it's a violation of the Microsoft Office 2004 user agreement to share it with another person.

Then you should shop around on the web. It can be fond cheap from places like Amazon.com and BUY.com.

Later, I bought Office 2004 and put it on the other Mac.
Even though both are paid for, either refuses to run when the other is running.

Something is definitely wrong. I have lots of clients running two or more copies of Office, with two or more different serial numbers, on networked Macs, and they're all able to run Office apps simultaneously on multiple computers. Only when it's the same serial number do they refuse to run.

Was the copy of Office 2004 you purchased an upgrade from the Office X you already owned?

Wes Groleau - 03 Jun 2008 02:42 GMT > Was the copy of Office 2004 you purchased an upgrade from the Office X > you already owned? Officially, no. However, both were on a contract between the University and Microsoft. I suspect that the contract allowed the Uni to make their own CDs, all with the same serial number. I don't remember whether I had to enter a product key for Office. I do know that all the WinDoze I bought through the Uni had a product key pre-entered in the install wizard.
It's tempting to cry, "Rip-Off!" but at ten dollars each.....

I know our Uni has a licence deal with M$ (and many other software companies) and distribute their own install disks. For M$ each installation gets its own serial number as far as I can see so I presume they keep track of the number installed in some way.

They have used software titles. You may find something there but don't hold your breath. Craigslist is also an option. But, you're really screened out the primary places to buy old software.

You might do a Google Shopping search and start there.
I usually check out buy.com and amazon.com specifically, because either one of them typically has a good price with free shipping and no tax, and they are both reputable retailers.

I have left M$ Office 100% behind.
Just a thought.
