You've taking the time to Google for HP's drivers and installed them,
right? I found the drivers using "HP Scanjet 8250 drivers". The files
are rather large (100MB+ on some) so if you don't have broadband, you
may want to pop for the CD.

Try first of all to delete all HP prefs files for the scanner from
username/library/preferences along with the folder 'By Host' also in the
prefs folder. Restart with the scanner connected and turned on.
The HP site says, it is Leopard and Tiger compatible... - Have you
updated the software lately after you've installed latest versions of
Tiger and Leopard?
Due to the HP website, it uses same drivers and software as the 8270
"CDHP Scanjet 8200c/8270 Series Software and Drivers". You can obtain
that full ver. 9.0 CD directly from HP. It is released nov.07. - HP will
have some money for sending the CDs, but I'm not sure how much they
claim at your place...
You can also download each part manually from this site. - I'll
recommend to see, what versions are on your own orig. CD and then
download the versions on the site, that are newer than those of yours.

Vuescan works with nearly everything, and so do Silverfast. Do take a
look at their products too before deciding, whether and what to buy...
