I am trying to create a quick way to find old mail in some, but not all
folders. I found out that mail folders inside mail folders don't get
picked up when looking for mail in the top level folder. I have to list
each folder by itself specifying mail older than some point in that
folder. Then, I have to look at each smart folder to see if anything is
in it. There are dozens of these.
Is there a way to get a summary in one folder of everything in all these
individual folders?

Sadly not AFAIK, one of the many shortcomings of Mail.app's smart
folders (and rules, for that matter).
