I have noticed that many spam posts have been marked as junk by previous
readers. That serves a useful purpose.
On the other hand, many posts that seem to be legitimate are also marked
as junk. Who does that? Is it frustrated advertisers? Is it just
nastiness on the part of regular readers?

It's your own personal newsreader's settings that is making those
decisions. Not some stranger hiding under your bed.

No, it's true. A bunch of us nasty regulars broke into his house and
messed up his spam filtering.

Huh? Nobody else has the ability to mark anything either way in *your*
news reader.

Change your news reader's settings.

The spam posts are NOT being marked by other people. They're being
marked by the program you're using. MT-NewsWatcher has a built-in junk
filter.
It's not perfect, but you can train it to be more accurate. When you
see that it made a mistake, use the "Mark as Junk" or "Mark as Not Junk"
command to correct it.
For more info, read the MT-NW online manual:

Thank you and others who have pointed this out. I could not believe that
MT-NewsWatcher was so inept at extrapolating my junk markings so
inappropriately.

It's only as good as you train it to be. Train it, and it will improve.

No you haven't. I don't know what you think you are seeing, but that is
not it.
