Yahoo Messenger

I installed Yahoo Messenger a few months back and never used it.
Tonight I fired it up and tried to talk to a friend. The window
scrolled back to the top at every line typed! Doesn't anybody
screen these calls!!!!!

I upgraded to 3.0 beta something, the latest travesty I guess,
and the scrolling problem seems to be gone.

But... messages don't appear linearly. It somehow decides to
lump messages in blocks somehow. How can I turn that off?

And I have a WebCam, being a MacBook, and the friend has
Windoze. I fired up my end of webcam, saw myself in the
bottom of the friends pane, saw a note that indicated the
other end was being requested to approve, the other end variously
saw something that didn't work to approve, or nothing. They don't
have a web cam installed, but this should not prevent seeing my
webcam. Is this a known Mac bug?

I miss the old windows log of connections. It seemed to be gone
in the old beta I had. Now I see there is something called
message archive. But under "Window" there seems to be two
selections. I can select one, but it doesn't "stick", nor
is there a useful help entry on "archive". Is this a known
Mac bug?

So, bottom line, this version seems to be so poorly implemented,
why has it even been released? Will there ever be a usable
version of Mac Yahoo Messenger?

My friend said I should move to AOL Messenger. Is that any
better?

Thanks, John

Certainly not. You should dump both of those and use Adium:

Which doesn't yet support video btw, so if you want that you'll have to
stick with YM.

Or use iChat which is included with Mac OS X and supports video chat
with anyone on the AOL IM network.

Video isn't necessary. I just thought since it was in YM it ought
to work. Silly me!

I installed Adium and am happy with it. And it looks like they are
competent programmers so their features work, and they are promising
video. I'll wager it works when it is delivered!

Goodbye forever Yahoo Messenger!

Sadly, I need to chat with Yahoo accounts. I will be lobbying them to
abandon it though.

Thanks, John

I use Adium, because many family members use Microsoft Instant
Messenger (or whatever it's called these days).   But it would be nice
to support more features.

If you have specific features in mind, request them:

Log in to Yahoo. Click the Yahoo Messenger menu and choose the
Preferences command. In the Preferences window, click the Messaging
button. The option you want is in there.

No. I use Yahoo Messenger with my Webcam all the time, both for talking
to Windows users and to mac users. It may be that your friend has a
firewall turned on; that's the most common cause of video conferencing
problems.

Im not sure what you're asking here, but it may be that setting it up to
put each connection in a separate window will solve this issue for you.

Once you get the preferences straightened out, it works quite well.

Sure, if the folks you want to talk to have AIM accounts. If they don't,
then not so much.

With AIM users, you can use the built in iChat. It's pretty sweet. :)

Two points:
1. Even though Yahoo 3.0 for Mac is a beta version, when I contacted
Yahoo, they did send me  a step by step procedure for resolving the
connectivity issue which i encountered. I never tried the video chat
so I don't know if that is working.

2. Why not use iChat which is compatible with AOL IM and has the
ability to video chat. Unfortunately, you can't use iChat to chat with
someone who has a yahoo account, only AIM and .mac

Hope this helps.
