Since upgrading from iTunes 4.9 to iTunes 7.6, I have been unable to
seach for or delete songs in my Music folder, or in any Playlist, that
uses a custom genre.
These are non-Digital Rights Management songs (like free podcasts and
CD rips). I can view the songs in their custom smart playlist folders,
I can play them in iTunes and on my iPod, but I cannot find them in
the iTunes Spotlight search, I cannot delete them in any view, and
they do not show a "Last Played" date even when I know they have been
played and other, non-custom genre files show a Last Played date.
None of these problems existed before upgrading (I didn't want to
upgrade from 4.9, but Apple forced me to do it to regain access to my
purchased songs).
I have an iPod mini and I keep all my songs on my iPod (with the
exception of purchased DRM songs downloaded from iTunes store, which
are in a folder on my computer).
Any ideas how I can force iTunes 7.6.x to treat my custom genre songs
like any other non-DRM song and allow search, deletion and play
history?
Thanks.

What kept you, until just now, from avoiding three full version upgrades
and numerous, interim, incremental updates?

Right-click or [control]-click an item in iTunes then select Show In
Finder and it should take you to that item.

Why aren't ALL of your songs on your computer? iTunes, the application
that an iPod depends upon to manage almost its every function, is on
your computer. So should all your tracks.
I suggest you put *ALL* of your tracks on your computer, in the iTunes
Music folder, and let iTunes do its thing.

Sorry, no. :(
I have long since forgotten what it was like under iTunes 4.9. It
sounds as though you have (or had) gone out of your way to make it
difficult, apparently in some cases, impossible, for iTunes to manage
what you wish it to manage.
Since making such a long "jump" to the new version of iTunes and
considering that you apparently have a mere 6 GB (or less) of stuff, you
would do well to start from scratch with a new iTunes Library and
re-import EVERYTHING into iTunes. BTDT. Good luck.

Your reply boils down to "Sorry, No." you don't have an answer. You
should have left it at that. I did not upgrade from 4.9 until I was
forced to do so because higher versions changed the simple 4.9 user
interface, gobble memory and deliver no new functionality for my iPod
mini (which doesn't display video). Tell me, did you thoroughly beta-
test iTunes 7.6.x before deciding to upgrade, or did you just follow
the herd and download what Apple's marketing department suggests?
Users worldwide report problems with 7.6.x's handling of genres.

About SafariSorter, which I'm using with the MBA now:
The trick is to copy the application to ~/Applications/, your
designated local apps folder. I run it from there as a startup item.

Sorry, tried to cancel this one, unsuccessfully it seems.

Something else is wrong, it is not iTunes 7.6. I have about 99.9999% non
DRM tunes on my computer and a majority of them have custom genre tags
and they all can be found, sorted, and deleted just as they always have.

Maybe something else is wrong (with Windows, something else is always
wrong) but the problem is reported worldwide on many machines.
Thanks anyway.

I'm unable to view the original post. The quoted text above doesn't give
any details about what happens when you try to search for a song that
uses a custom genre. Can you explain how to reproduce the problem, and
what results you see?

If I understand what you're asking about, then I have created several "custom
genres". At this instant I'm playing all the "Ragtime" tunes, selected using
iTune's search function (so I get not only those in the "Ragtime" genre but
also things like Bessie Smith's version of "Alexander's Ragtime Band", which
I had for some reason put in the "blues" genre).
As far as I can tell, they're treated no differently than any other genre in
iTunes 7, which was updated just this morning.
