My wife spent the morning talking with Verizon about her failure to be
able to pay for phone service on-line.    Finally she asked my wife
what browser she was using, and she said "Safari".   The "help" desk
lady said my wife needs I.E.   My wife asked if Firefox, Opera, or
Camino would work, and she said no.

I'll try next week.

I use the current Firefox when I pay my online Verizon cell phone bill.
 The "help" desk didn't help.

Nunsense.  Completely untrue for most of the rest of us.  I can use
Safari 3.04 and 3.1 on my 10.4.11 Dual G4 system to pay my Verizon
Wireless bill on-line.  I suspect you got a really stupid CS person (or
someone who's really smart and knows that Mac's IE 5 just won't work for
most anything these days).

If your system is so borked that you're having problems with browsers
and web sites, maybe it's time to do a total wipe and reload from media.
I did this some 5 years ago and my system has a lot accumulated cruft
from installed/deinstalls/etc. over the 2 OS updates I've done since I
installed it.  So, I audited it (made careful note of all applications,
CMM's, preference panes, network settings, printers, cron jobs, etc.),
did a full backup to another disk, and wiped the drive.  After about 72
hours, I had a working system almost the same as what I'd wiped and
Apple Security Updates don't screw it up any more.

Or you could just drive to the local Verizon Wireless store and use
their payment center.  It will scan the check and credit your account
right there in the store.  All the local stores have one here in
California.

That's what she did.   But I was objecting to the help desk's claim.

Huh?  I have Verizon DSL and pay my bill online all the time using
Safari.  What problems is your wife having?

I don't know - I'll work with her next time.

If you think that's bad you should ask them about problems with Ubuntu.
; )  Most ISPs are the same, BTW. In general, the world is clueless
about platforms other than Windows.

If and when Verison makes FiOS available in my neighborhood, I'll be
glad to call them "my new friends", at least long enough for a test run.
