I Googled and found many sources for a battery replacement, some with
tool packages, for the do-it-yourself crowd. Does anyone have a
recommendation on who to purchase these from?

I have had good experience with www.macsales.com

I've replaced batteries in a few of those 4G iPods and have found the
tools included with some batteries to be universally useless. The best
tools for opening an iPod are Dunlop Tortex guitar picks. They're cheap,
virtually unbreakable, and they have no sharp edges. I start with a thin
one to get the case wedged open and switch to a thicker one to finish
the job. Try a few gauges to figure out which works best for you.

This isn't an answer to your question, but it always interests me when I
hear about others needing to replace their iPod batteries. I purchased
my first iPod (3rd Generation) in 2003. I now own three iPods: an iPod
3rd generation, an iPod with color display, and an iPod classic). None
of them have needed a battery replacement.

You, of course, know that now that you've posted this message, all your
batteries will die tomorrow. Like washing your car only to have it rain
the next day.

I did think of that, actually, but I countered it with a couple knocks
on a nearby piece of wood!  :P  *grin*

you're lucky.  five years is an unusually long time for a lithium ion
battery.  how much run time do you get?  how does it compare to the
original run time?

also, the replacement batteries have a higher capacity than the ones
they replace.  i replaced the battery in my 2nd gen ipod, and run time
went from about 5 hours to 20+ hours (original spec was something like
8 hours i think).

Well, this is embarrassing. I'll have to get back with you on that. I
seem to have misplaced my trusty old 3G iPod at the moment!

I've replaced the battery in my 3G, bought new from Apple, last year.

Apple was selling 3G iPods new as recently as last year?

Why did you change the battery?

No, you failed to parse the sentence correctly despite my commas.  I replaced
the battery last year.  The 3G was bought new from Apple.  If you are still
confused, alt.usage.english is a good group for you to subscribe to.

> Why did you change the battery?

Because the old one held a charge for about 20 minutes.

I failed to even notice the last comma.  ; )

I don't know if you are trying to be an a.s, but you certainly *seem* to
be trying...

Sometimes it comes naturally without even trying.  Of course, I thought YOU were
trying to be an a.s in the first place.

No, I was genuinely surprised that Apple was still seling 3G iPods that
recently. I hadn't bothered to look up the production dates of the
device, and for all I knew, you purchased it through some channel of
which I was not aware. I was actually prepared to read that you had in
fact purchased one from Apple last year!

> Ain't the Internet grand?

It's something else, for sure.   : )
