Let me preface my question by stating that I am a complete ignoramus
when it comes to any sort of video file processing.
I just downloaded a seven files series from youtube in .flv format, and
I would like to splice them together into one continuous video which
will fit on a CD-ROM. I have MPEG streamclip, and when I tried to
convert them to .mov files, they blew up to 20 times their flv size.
Converting them to mp4 files resulted in a slight increase in size to
doubling, which is OK. I guess I just learned what an efficient
transmission medium flv is for quality to size.
Anyway, is there a freeware or shareware program that I can splice these
7 pieces in either .flv or .mp4 into one video file?
Since I want to give this video to a very unsophisticated Windows XP
user with a dial up connection, will Windows XP play back a .flv file
on a CD just by double clicking on it?
TIA

You can combine the mp4s using iMovie -- put the clips in sequence and
then export the result.
It depends upon whether that particular XP system has an appropriate
player and/or codec for flash video files and has the .flv extension
mapped to the viewer app. (Same is true of the Mac or linux.)

I use the command-line tool suite called qt_tools to do that with
scripts I've written to automate such things:

I saw some kinda think like that on versiontracker recently. It's
entire reason was gluing clips together.

This suite does that and a whole lot more. I use it, for instance, to
automatically convert a folder full of individual JPEG images captured
from web cameras in my security system into QuickTime movies. It's a
great piece of software!
