hello,

dunno if theres a better group for it, but i am experiencing some
trouble getting MS SQL Server 2005 installed on my Windows XP SP2
guest OS.

after loading the SQL Server 2005 disc it performs the initial "System
Configuration Check". unfortunately it reports a Warning:

SQL Server Edition Operating System - "Some components of this edition
of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details,
see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server
2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online."

...this appears to be preventing me from installing the actual SQL
Server Database Services (the main deal); i can install the client
tools only.

any idea how i can find out more info? the version of SQL Server 2005
i am trying to install is from our company's ISO:

  en_sql_2005_ent_x86_dvd.iso

...I believe I've seen this same ISO used in a Parallels vm.

thanks!

Yeah, this group is for Mac applications. You're talking about a Windows
application, and further, Windows installation issues. You won't get
much help here, I'm afraid.

well, the problem is directly related to VMWare Fusion, which is a mac
app :)

if it was a real Windows environment, and not Fusion for Mac, id have
no issue and thus no post.

also got a thread going on the vmware web forum, will post results.

Well... You're right that the way Fusion emulates the hardware is
causing the problem, but you'd get the same error if you attempted to
install on an unsupported PC - so I'm betting the solution to that
problem will not be directly related to Fusion.

That definitely seems like a better venue.

there were a couple of issues, one of which being that my virtual OS
didnt have enough ram allocated to it (even tho Fusion is supposed to
use 500mb by default, it wasnt quite enough). groovy.

for any one interested, here is an excellent VMWare Fusion config
guide for win developers:

Got a link to the thread so the rest of us can read about the other
details?

the other was my own stupidity. the two errors from the initial scan
were hardware, and os incompatibility. ram fixed hardware -- but
Windows XP cant do the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition.

Ok. I guess I was more interested in how you figured out low RAM was the
cause.

I can't figure out if you're using Parallels-Desktop or VMWare-Fusion.

Have you tried using BootCamp to install Windows XP SP2 as a dual boot
option and tried the SQL Server install on it? It is even possible
with Parallels-Desktop to use you BootCamp installed Windows partition,
but I've no experience with that.

The other option could be to look for a pre-configured virtual appliance
having Windows XP SP2 and the SQL Server 2005. Try e.g. looking at:
