Is there some way to turn off Mail Status?

On my MBP, I have to click the Mail Status drop-down or shortcut to open
the mail panel on my desktop.  On my wife's PB, it opens when she starts
AIM and there does not seem to be a way to prevent it.  However, since
mine doesn't do it, there must be.

Neither of us use aim.com mail, so there is no reason to see this panel.

Is there a reason you're using AIM rather than iChat?

I'm just curious:  Is there some compelling reason you are using AIM
rather than iChat?

Habit.  It is what I use at the office.  It also has a news and stock
ticker.

...and advertisements, and annoying sounds, and a horrible Windows-esque
look and feel, and tons of other bloated features (like Mail Status),
and... Hardly seems worth the trouble to me - but that's me.

Thanks - just wondering.
