NewsWatcher sent the following command: DATA
The server sent the following response: 451 timeout (#4.4.2)
Server errors sometimes mean that you did something wrong. For example, if you type a password incorrectly, you get a server error message. ======

" Once the transmission channel is established, the SMTP-sender sends a MAIL command indicating the sender of the mail. If the SMTP-receiver can accept mail it responds with an OK reply. The SMTP-sender then sends a RCPT command identifying a recipient of the mail. If the SMTP-receiver can accept mail for that recipient it responds with an OK reply; if not, it responds with a reply rejecting that recipient (but not the whole mail transaction). The SMTP-sender and SMTP-receiver may negotiate several recipients. When the recipients have been negotiated the SMTP-sender sends the mail data, terminating with a special sequence. If the SMTP-receiver successfully processes the mail data it responds with an OK reply. The dialog is purposely lock-step, one-at-a-time."
So this seems to indicate the connection to the server was already established, and then, for whatever reason, the server stopped responding to MTNW after MTNW sent the DATA command.

You aren't trying to use MTNW as a regular email client are you? Because that won't work. I'd be certain that you were, except you said it hadn't worked for months which indicates that it once did. smtp.att.yahoo.com works for your mail account. It has nothing to do with your Usenet account which MTNW is concerned with.

He's having some kind of communication problem with the server, but it's not that he can't find the server. It's not happening until well into the SMTP transaction.

MTNW has an extremely limited email client that responds to Usenet posts only AFAIK. I use the the original posters mail server and in Personalities, I have:
(path in menu) Special->Personalities->Mail Server: Security: Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Authentication: Automatic (most secure) my username my password check on 'Save Password"
It works for me using Supernews and AT&T broadband.

That's what the little "Send Email" button is for. You just have to tell MTNW (Special/Personalities, Mail Server) what server you're using, on what port, and MTNW will hand the email off. You have to make sure that the security and authentication settings match what your server expects.

Your server is smtp.att.yahoo.com you need a secure sockets layer (SSL) connection. When you set the security, the port should change to 465. I don't know that the authentication should be set to, but automatic should work. If not, there are only two other choices.

Why not just tell us? It's like we are pulling teeth to get it out of you!
The settings that work for my particular SMTP server are:
Port: 25 Security: Use Transport Layer Security (TLS) if available Authentication: Password

SSL port 465
that are required by smtp.att.yahoo.com

"SSL port 465" tells us what you have set for only two of the three settings I asked about.

To the OP: You've specified port 465 and SSL but you keep on _not_ answering the question about Authentication. How is _that_ set?
