MT-NewsWatcher and filters

Shawn Hirn - 13 Mar 2008 11:56 GMT I am a long-time MT-NewsWatcher user. Until a few days ago, setting up a filter worked fine. Now, MT-NewsWatcher generates a segmentation fault and crashes. Even if I start to set up a filter and I click the cancel button in the filter window, it will crash. I am using the latest version under Mac OS X 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro first generation.
Has anyone else here had that problem? If so, were you able to fix it? I tried emailing the author, but I haven't heard back yet.

Signature Note: Please send all responses to the relevant news group. E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter.

It looks like gibberish to me, but maybe you or someone else might understand it, so here's my most recent MT-NewsWatcher crash log ...

With MTNW open, I started Text Edit, typed some text, copied it to the clipboard (Command-C), then pasted the same text back into the same document (Command-V). Then I went back to MTNW and tried to set up a filter and it crashed again on me.
Is there some way I can reset the clipboard other than copying text to it?

You should also try the beta of MTNW, despite being tagged as a Leopard update, it IS an update and it's solved issues for a couple of other people.
The current version is 3.5.3b2 last I checked.

Pasting new stuff > into it hasn't put an end to this problem. Well I can't imagine why MTNW would be looking at the clipboard when you close the filter dialog box. It's strange, to say the least. And it's certainly possible nothing is wrong with your clipboard at all.
It's possible your MTNW preferences file is corrupt in some way. Try this:
1. Quit MTNW. 2. In the Finder, move this file to the desktop: ~/Library/Preferences/MT-NewsWatcher Prefs Ÿ/MT-NewsWatcher Prefs 3. Run MTNW again. 4. Create a filter to see if it crashes.
Since the "MT-NewsWatcher Prefs" file contains all MTNW settings, you'll have to go through the steps of configuring MTNW during the test. Once you are done with the test, just quit MTNW and move the preferences file from the desktop back to its original location. Your settings will return.
It's also possible your filters preference file is corrupt in some way. You could try the same test procedure with this file as well:
~/Library/Preferences/MT-NewsWatcher Prefs Ÿ/MT-Newswatcher Filters
Luckily, if the filters preference file is bad, the fix is easy:
1. Run MTNW. 2. From the menu bar, choose Windows > Filters List. 3. From the menu bar, choose File > Export and save the filters to an XML file. 4. Quit MTNW. 5. Delete the "MT-Newswatcher Filters" file. 6. Run MTNW again. 7. From the menu bar, choose Windows > Filters List. 8. Drag the XML file you saved from the Finder and drop it onto the Filters List window.

I tried both ideas. Neither helped. I also decided to try MT-NewsWatcher on my PowerMac G5 to see if it has the same problem as my MacBook Pro. I want to set up a filter to kill off all postings that have an organization header set to groups.google.com so I can stop seeing all the massive spam my server hosts from there. As soon as I tried it on my G5, you guessed it. MT-NewsWatcher failed. Same error as on my MBP. I also tried upgrading to the latest version. Same difference. Crash.
This is taking up way too much time. I have already spent a week on this issue to no avail. I appreciate your help, but I think its time to cut my losses and look at other options for Usenet news such as Unison.
Thanks again for your help.

One last thing to try before you throw in the towel:
Rather than filtering on "Organization", try filtering on "Message-ID" contains "googlegroups" instead.
What's frustrating to me is I have never seen another person report this problem - yet you seem to be having it on multiple computers! Very strange.

Perhaps its because I share a newsgroup file that this problem occurs on both Macs. I will try it without opening up my newsgroups file and see what happens.

As a test, I went into my Applications folder on my G5 and I started MT-NewsWatcher without opening up my newsgroup file at all. I then tried putting in a filter, but it crashed again.

Or for the hell of it, has he looked at his filters in the Windows->'Show Filters List' to see if anything is fubar. You can cut old filters there. And I agree with Message-ID as the way to make googlegroups disappear. Kill if 'Message-ID' contains "googlegroups" in the * directory just eliminated a mountain of garbage for me, and I ain't going back. My only other thought is to trash everthing associated with MTNW and reinstall it. I've never seen the problem.

Trashing MT-NW and all its associated files is a good idea. I will give that a shot and see what happens after reinstalling it.

That's what I was thinking tonight. So with that in mind, on my PowerMac G5, I just deleted (trashed and emptied trash) everything in the MT-NewsWatcher preferences folder (prefs, filter file, and junk learning file), then I started MT-NW. With this new user, are you sharing the newsrc file?
Something related to that comes to mind: Can you verify that the method by which you connect to the remote volume holding that shared newsrc file is the same on the non-working account and the working new user account? In the Finder, File > Get Info on the volume in each account and verify the connection protocol is the same (afp://, smb://, etc.).

I connect using the standard Apple file protocol afp. Since I didn''t try sharing my newsrc file via my test account, there's nothing to compare in that regard. On my primary account, I also tried opening MT-NW without accessing my shared newsrc file (just double-clicking on the MT-NW icon) and it too crashed when I tried doing anything with filters so I don't think my shared newsrc file is the culprit.

> Much to > my surprise, when I went to create a filter, it worked this time. [...] In a new user account, assuming you didn't copy over any prefs files, MT-NW will create a new filter file in the default location. Given that that apparently works fine, your regular filters file might well be corrupted. (Or was that ruled out already?)
Btw, I assume you have already made sure all this is not simply due to file system corruption?
Another thing to check is whether MT-NW knows the location of your filters file. (Can be set in its prefs.)

If so, I'd simplify that set-up to use a local file (created afresh) on each Mac and see if the problem disappears. If so, look into the details of your sharing scheme and fix what's wrong with it.
If you're sharing any further MT-NW files (filter file, prefs, etc.) I'd try the same: check whether the problem disappears when you let MT-NW use (freshly created) local files instead.
FWIW, MT-NW can auto-fetch/upload newsrc files over ftp, which has worked reliably for me for some 10 years. It would be comfortable to be able to do something similar with its filters file I suppose, but I've never tried and would not be entirely surprised if doing so would introduce problems.
