I'm trying to find my iCal data file.
I have looked for .ics files, and I have looked at the Today smart
folder after changing something from within iCal then quitting iCal.
I'm not finding it.
==============
The reason for this is that I have an .ics file which was created from
Outlook for a meeting request. I saved the .ics file, but every time I
try to load it into iCal at home, it selects the work calendar instead
of the home calendar. I want it in my home calendar, but it never gives
me the option of picking my calendar the way my .ics events do.
So I thought I would edit the iCal data file to move it. But I can't
find it.

I can't say I know anything about content and structure, but it appears
that my iCal calendars are located in my ~Library/Calendars folder.
There I see four folders whose names end in ".calendar" and can't
account for that, as I only have three (though I used to have another).
And there's additional sync and cache data, no doubt related to the fact
that I sync my iCal contents to an in-house iMac via .Mac and with my
iPhone.

Uh, ok, but why are you looking at the internal structure anyway. I get
ics events all the time and I just go and change the event in iCal to
suit my needs just like an event that I put there manually. Since you
sync from your iMac, you might have to make the change there, then sync
again.

I didn't say I was looking at the internal structure, only that I
located what appears to be my iCal data and did not know anything about
the structure. The OP's query was about where to find his iCal data.

Hmmm. I wonder what would happen if I looked at some events in one of
these computer-named folders, determined which folder was which, deleted
the event from the wrong folder from within iCal, and then dragged in my
.ics event into the correct folder.
Probably nothing.
I expect to be buying my backup drive this weekend maybe - it might be
good to wait until I have a backup before experimenting.

Yikes! Are you saying one can export their calendar from a
Windows/Outlook world, any kinda way, and be able to load it into their
Mac Mail.app! Oh please tell me it can be done!

If you're using a Windows app that lets you export the calendar as a
.ics file, you can import it into iCal, which I think is what you meant
to write instead of Mail.

Yes I did but was giddy with the possibilities. Can one export the
.ics from Outlook directly to an iPhone?

I save off Outlook calendar events as .ics files. I can actually copy
them into my iPod's calendar file and see them on my iPod, but when they
synchronize with iCal, they get overwritten with whatever is on iCal
(too bad they won't synchronize). Or I can click on them, or e-mail
them as attachments to myself and then open them at home.
But my iCal has two libraries which I named home and work. Most of the
.ics files give me options of editing them or when I click on them,
letting me put them where I want. The exception was a meeting request
that I invited my son-in-law to participate in (member guest golf),
which I want to be in the home library, but which automatically goes to
the work library and won't let me edit.

Just change the iCal entry to suit your needs. There's no need to alter
the actual .ics file.

All of the events that gave me a choice of were to put them are editable
from within iCal. This (appointment? I forgot what it's called),
event is the type I invited someone else to join, and for some reason I
can neither pick which calendar it goes to, nor edit it from within iCal.
