Can audio files in iPod-playable formats that are loaded into an iPod in
"disk mode" be identified and played from the iPod?

Not unless you can reverse-engineer the way iTunes places audio files on
the iPod and mimic it.

No. Only tracks synced by iTunes will be playable on the iPod.

Granted it's extremely klunky but since you can "see" the files (sorta) by
making all files visible and ccan navigate the arcane resulting file
structure to get to "the files," couldn't you then play them? My iPod is on
my desk at work or I'd test; it's been years since I've looked at it via
invisibility. There are several free-/shareware apps to get to your iPod
files.
