Please tell me that iPhoto is now "wickedly fast"! (I'm still limping along
with my G4 Windtunnel.)

I never saw much point in multiple libraries. After reading your words, I'm
glad.

Sad but true.

While others have sung its praises, I am still underwhelmed by (the new)
Events. I had no trouble with the previous "Roll" concept although,
apparently, some did.
I'm mystified by your dupes. You must've imported the same pic into more than
one of your original libraries. Are they duplicated in the (new) main library?
You can easily merge multiple Events by selecting the target events ([Shift]-
or [Command]-click then click the [Merge] button in the bottom toolbar.

As long as your photos still exist, all is not lost. You may wish to create a
few, new albums and drag photos from one or more Events into each before
merging events. This may (or may not) help you clean-up things.

Assuming you now have a SINGLE library, you should be able to sort by DATE (as
I do) and, creating albums and Smart Albums and filling them, manually rebuild
your photo world (and sanity?).
I suppose you could regress and start over. I assume you imported ALL of your
old libraries into the new iPhoto which then created a SINGLE library out of
them. If yes, you could start over and create a new Library in iPhoto '08,
import ONE of the old libraries into that. Then create ANOTHER, new '08
Library and import another of your old libraries into that, and so on. Since
I prefer a SINGLE library, I do not recommend this approach.

I suggest the latter. In the long run, you might be better off and enjoy
better results working with what's there now.
> Either way, it looks like I've got a lot of work ahead of me...
It sure sounds that way.
I have always used a SINGLE library although appreciated the fact that I could
create a NEW library if I wished. I also marvel at the occasional rant of the
hapless user that tries to complicate that which doesn't need to be
complicated. (Yours is NOT a rant.) They resent that Apple SEEMS to feel
their way is best. If I wrote the software, I would RIGHTFULLY feel that way.
It's hard to tell (for sure) what a mess you have but I hope this helps. Just
take your time and plug away at what you have AND enjoy your new Mac Pro, ya
lucky bas**rd! Good luck.

Oh yes... MUCH zippier! (I had a windtunnel, too). ;-)

yes, all the photos are here... thankfully THAT's not my problem...

You've pretty well confirmed my best guess. Thanks.
One follow up question: Is there a number of photos per library at
which it is advisable to create additional libraries?
One reason I was doing it before was to make it easy to back up
libraries to individual DVD-R disks... but with the price of hard
drives dropping so, that rationale seems less important. But I've read
about people complaining about iPhoto slowing down as libraries become
larger and larger...
Thanks again,

Not that I know of.
My iPhoto '08 Library has 8797 items and doesn't seem any slower than it did
several years ago with many fewer. I have done a "full rebuild" (selected ALL
options) of the Library once since converting to '08. I think it loads (and
runs) quite acceptably given my system.
I recall that in his keynote address for a previous version ('05?), Jobs
demonstrated iPhoto and stated it was bringing-up over 25,000 items.
It's reasonable to assume that, with the latest version running on a Mac Pro,
iPhoto should easily manage that many.

Duh! [slapping own forehead]
Now the multiple libraries make sense! (sheesh)

Agreed.
About a year ago I replaced my Windtunnel's 80 GB drive with a 250. Prior to
that I acquired two, 250 GB LaCie "Porsche" Firewire external drives. So far,
I have not truly NEEDED to write a DVD. Considering my G4 came with a Combo
drive, I guess that's a good thing. <g>

I read the same, few complaints. They are, of late, nonexistent. I'll bet
you're just fine for the long haul with '08 and a single library.
It's time for another hard-drive, though. Have fun!

I've been poking around in my older iPhoto 06 library folders, and it
seems that part of the reason why I have so damn many 'events' is
because when I upgraded from an earlier version of iPhoto to 06 (can't
remember when this occurred), iPhoto changed it's cataloging method...
In one library of about 700mb, my photos were moved from about 20-25
folders (year/month/date/originals) to a year folder filled with 67 new
folders labeled, 01, 01_2, 01_3, 02, etc, etc...) When imported to
iPhoto 08, each folder is translated into a new event. This all seems
to occur independently of whether I'd had albums created within the
library in question...
Now I seem to understand what has happened, but it doesn't help in
reorganizing...
