Microsoft Office 2008 Special Media Edition -- Sweet Deal

TaliesinSoft - 02 Mar 2008 23:22 GMT
In the middle January I purchased a (actually redundant) copy of Office 2004
Student / Teacher edition so that I could then qualify for the very low cost
upgrade to Office 2008 Special Media Edition which normally sells for a
smidgen under $500, but which I could have for under $10 if I had a recent
purchase of Office 2004. I sent the requested information to Microsoft. Since
then I haven't received a single communication from Microsoft and I'm curious
as to whether others have received a reply.

I ordered it on Black Friday. I have received a couple of e-mail that
it is on back order. The first e-mail on Jan. 3 estimated a Jan. 28
ship date. LOL The second e-mail on Feb.13 estimates a March 10 ship
date.

Same here, although they *did* charge my card for the shipping fee
last week. *Somebody* there hasn't forgotten about me. :^)

I ordered mine Nov. 12, 2007.  I got an email confirmation with a link
to the order status page but to see the order status I had to set up a
user name and password on their site.  The status shows the order is in
process.  I emailed MS a few weeks ago and they did respond very quickly
but said they had not yet received my paperwork (proof of purchase,
etc.).  I re-sent it to them, followed up again and this is what I got
back:

"Your order is currently still in "pending" status while we await the
processing of your proof of purchase materials. Note that it can take 4
weeks or more to process them once received. Beyond 4 weeks, you may
wish to check any tracking information that may be available for your
shipment to us."

I sent the materials regular mail so I probably couldn't track them but
I have all the copies and can send them again certified if necessary.

It certainly sounds to me like they're in no hurry to fulfill these
orders.

There's a phone number to call that was listed in one of the
emails I received. I got more or less the same info when I called.

It wouldn't break my heart if it didn't show up until after
the first patches are released. I'm gonna pass on installing
it until then anyway...

From what I can gather from people who own Office 2008, wait! Microsoft
is no doubt fixing numerous problems and I suspect the delay is due to
them wanting to remaster Office 2008 to include more bug fixes.

I am personally not in a rush for it to come. The old version works
fine. I ordered it because I got it for a pittance. I already have my
$100 rebate check and it is in the bank. I did have to call them about
that since they claimed I had not sent in the proof of purchase. That
was funny cause when I called they did not argue, they said it was a
mistake, that I had sent it in. I think they just wanted me to call and
if I had not I probably would not have gotten the check.

I'm not in a hurry to receive it either, but I do want to actually
receive it at some point.  ; )

Did you give Microsoft your email address?

So far, I have received four "Order update" notice email messages from
Microsoft stating the order is being delayed. The very first notice said
that unless I contacted Microsoft, the order would automatically be
cancelled! Luckily I read the message in its entirety and called to
confirm I did indeed still want the product. So far, the ship date has
been pushed to 1/7/2008, then to 1/28/2008, then to 2/18/2008, and again
to 3/10/2008!

It seems very fishy to me that Microsoft is unable to ship this to me
when many, many others have already received theirs. I'm afraid
Microsoft simply doesn't want to fulfill the order, because I would be
getting it basically for free (the cost of shipping). If that turns out
to be the case, and Microsoft somehow doesn't ship it to me, I will be
very displeased. I ordered this product through Microsoft's own freaking
promotion! If they didn't want to do the promotion, they shouldn't have
offered it to begin with.

I got the emails with the shifting ship date as well.  The last one I got
said 2/25.  Then last week my CC was charged for shipping, so we'll see if
it comes soon...

1. Don't top-post <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style>

2. Do trim what you are replying to as much as possible whilst keeping
some context.

3. It is illegal to charge for a product (or shipping) before it is
actually shipped.

I just now talked to a Microsoft support person at 1-888-285-6247, the
telephone contact number which is on the Super Suite Deal redemption form.
The person was unable to find any information regarding my order but stated
that they had received over 30,000 orders and that they have not processed
them all. It was suggested that I call back in a week or two. I do have
copies of everything that was sent to Microsoft, and I also have the USPS
delivery conformation that parcel (I had to include that idiot plastic box
top with the Office 2004 serial number) I sent was received.

So, we'll see!

Same here.  They won't get away with "forgetting" me very easily.

I got my copy of Office 2004 at the last moment and then went through
the online order submission process.

I checked over the weekend of the 22nd-23rd and saw that there was an
issue with my order. I e-mailed them asking about it and they responded
with this:  "We apologize for any concern this status message may have
caused. Please be assured that your proof of purchase materials have
been received, and your order has been released to await shipment once
inventory is available. The "issue" refers to the default back order
status of all recently released orders for this offer."

They have now charged my credit card and the status page says that the
order has shipped. Via Airborne Express...lovely. They didn't provide a
tracking number so I have no bloody idea when it'll show up and they
never go to my apartment building to check if I'm home or to leave a
note saying that they dropped it off at the office. They just go to the
office and I don't know it's there unless the office calls me...

Well, maybe it'll show up this week...

Most Airborne packages are delivered by the USPS.

The past three I've had delivered via Airborne Express (now a part of
DHL) have all gone straight to the office without them coming by my
apartment. USPS comes here. The normal letter carrier knows I'm home
when he gets here. I never miss packages from USPS unless I'm actually
not home.

Right, but often the Airborne packages are delivered by the USPS package
guy, not the USPS letter carrier.

USPS has usually been pretty reliable. I say 'pretty reliable' because
now knowing what you said, I don't know if they tried delivering my
other packages. But USPS has always been good with packages. Stuff sent
specifically via Airborne has been pretty unreliable for to my door
delivery.

I won't be installing mine until I know for certain they've fixed the
lame-a.s broken Palm synchronization "support" in 2008 - which will
hopefully entail releasing an update Palm Sync Conduit! Grrr...

Hopefully they will.

It's not something I need.

The only annoyance for me so far is that even though the
new Entourage imported all the existing rules it seems to
ignore them until I edit and save each one.

Annoying, but not a showstopper. I don't have that many rules.

What, you don't like having to do it indirectly via iCal and Address
Book and losing your categories and such in the process?

Don't forget about getting your address book entries imported into Erage
3 or 4 or even 8 fold!

Hey, if one is good, 8 is better!

Good, because it's absolutely not a valid replacement.  Heck, it's not
even a half-way decent invalid replacement.

I plan to call Microsoft the day after receiving Office 2008 to complain
that I can no longer synchronize my Palm Treo. I'm going to play it very
dumb and give them hell. I've set aside a couple hours - I think that
should be long enough to make an impact.  ; )

Finally found out that I had a package in the office for my apartment
complex. The two times I called to check, the person who signed for it
wasn't there and the person in the office at the time was too busy. It
arrived on the 3rd, the office called me up about it on the 8th, about 5
minutes before they were closing for the day. Forgot to pick it up
yesterday, but did remember today.

I did not get a tracking number from Microsoft.

I did not get a notice from Airborne that they attempted to deliver a
package to me. They just went right to the office. And it was Airborne
who delivered it, not USPS.

USPS, FedEx and UPS all manage to leave a note saying that I have a
package in the office. I wonder why Airborne can't. I wonder if I'll
ever use Airborne if I have a choice in the matter...

Gee, why is it so surprising the customer-service leader Microsoft is
in no hurry to fulfill all its low-cost orders while people who pay
full price get theirs?  One can't help but wonder how much you've
really saved after you've spent so much time on the phone.

Personally, I've only called once, and that took all of 5 minutes.  5

Today I received an email from the "Microsoft Care Team" requesting that I
fax to them copies of what I submitted by mail, stating when they receive
them that my order will be processed. Why it had to be a fax and not just an
email puzzles me. Given that I can't fax from home it cost me seven dollars
to fax the materials.

This afternoon I received an email from Microsoft stating that the materials
I sent in were satisfactory and that I am now officially on the list to get
my Office 2008 Special Media Edition. The email even includes a link to track
the status of the delivery.

So the end result is that I will get the "Suite Deal" but what happened to
the package I sent in and for which I got a delivery verification will
apparently remain a mystery.

I just checked the status web page for my order, and the status has been
changed to "Complete", which apparently means the order is fulfilled and
has shipped:

Product                                           Price     Qty  Item#
OFFICE MAC MEDIA EDITION 2008 EN DV     $0.00     1         FWA-00062

I see no tracking number on the page. I'll give it a few days and call
if I don't receive it by then.
