I've given up on Safari for Gmail. Firefox as you've noted works. So does
Camino.

You're not alone. I've noted that after a while, Safari 3.0.4 will just
stop responding to the javascript on the GMAIL page. The only solution
I've found is to quit Safari and start it again.
I also use Yahoo's email a lot for sending out anti-spam LART emails.
That page's Compose and Check Mail buttons stop working after a while.
Mostly, I think the multiple "y5beta=yes" strings in the URL are the
problem. I clear them out, redisplay the page, and the it works again.
You might also try using the HTML interface instead. For a while, Gmail
just didn't work right with Safari (V2 or V3). It's gotten better, but
I think there's bugs in the Javascript implementation.

Why not set up your mail client to access gmail via imap and not bother
with a web browser? I do that and it works fine.
