Hi all,

Do there exist any alternatives to Timbuktu Remote and Microsoft
Remote Desktop for the Mac? I want to access an iMac at work, using
if possible an open-source solution at home.

Thanks for reading,

Have a look at OSXvnc as the sever and either Chicken of the VNC or the
faster JollysFastVNC as the client.  While VNC sopports a simple
password authentication scheme, I would strongly suggest you go the
extra mile and deploy them using an SSH tunnel.

A very nice custom VNC solution is built into 10.5, if you can run that.
If not, "OSXvnc.app" and "Chicken of the VNC.app" are a nice pair.

And I have to say, I've been very impressed with its performance.  Blows
the socks off Chicken and Jolly's for accessing my home machine from the
office.

At the same time, it has some rather annoying bugs. For instance, on
more than one occasion, I've found it in a state where all clicks were
registered as control- or right-clicks.

I haven't tried it, but do you know if the built-in solution permits
tunneling through SSH?
