It sounds like you have directory problems on your target drive.  Have
you run any disk repair utilities?

By the way, please don't keep starting new threads for posts that are
continuations of previous threads.  *I* remember reading your previous
posts, but not everyone will, and this makes it difficult to know what
exactly you're talking about.

I would suggest running Leopard's Disk Utility on the file system.  
It is possible that some tweaks need to be made to the 10.1 file
system so that Time Machine can use it, and Disk Utility might
handle them as part of repairing a file system

<fpup5b$5ku$1@theodyn.ncf.ca>. Summary: attempting to use an iMac
running 10.1 in Firewire target mode as a Time Backup backup destination
for another computer running 10.5. Gunther - it would be helpful if you
followed up to the same thread rather than starting a new one.]

A likely explanation: Time Machine requires that the destination volume
be in the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format. Other requirements are
that ACLs are enabled and ownership is not being ignored.

Mac OS X 10.1 does not support journalling, so you may not be able to
get this combination to work.

It is possible to enable journalling with Disk Utility (in 10.5), but
after doing so, you may find that the iMac won't be able to boot from
its hard drive any more, because it won't recognise the file system. If
it does boot, it may destroy the journal, requiring that journalling be
enabled again next time you use it with 10.5.

To be able to achieve this combination in a more useful manner, you
should upgrade the iMac to a later version of Mac OS X. I believe that
10.2 supported journalling, but it was off by default, and it is fully
supported by 10.3 and later. ACLs are supported by 10.4 and later.

I don't know how you go about enabling ACL support on a drive.

Ownership is controlled via Get Info in Finder - there is a checkbox at
the bottom of the window saying whether or not to ignore ownership on
the volume.
