Does this fix the earlier reported problem with Quicktime.
Or are there still problems with Quicktime. (Is it safe to
upgrade from 7.3.1?)

What earlier reported problem with QuickTime?
I've upgraded here and see no ill effects.

Feel free to go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ and look up
the information about what the update does there. Apple has a different
downloadable version for Leopard, Tiger, Panther, and Windows. You
didn't say which OS you are using, so feel free to select the item
that's appropriate for you.

Which problems, and what functions are you performing with QuickTime
which might be problem areas that would affect you?
It apparently does fix the problem reported with QuickTime 7.4.0 and
After Effects, where taking more than ten minutes to render a QuickTime
movie resulted in an error and failure to complete the render.

I think I've seen a few people complaining about QuickTime 7.4.1, but it
seems to be working fine for me (at least for basic use) under Mac OS X
10.5 and 10.4. Try doing a Google search for commentary on it, and read
user comments on MacUpdate and VersionTracker.
One issue that might be confusing the situation: QuickTime 7.4.0 added
an option for disabling several old codecs for exporting (including
Cinepak, Sorenson and Motion JPEG). You can turn them back on again in
System Preferences, QuickTime, Advanced. (This hasn't changed for
7.4.1.)
