Suggestion to replace MT-NewsWatcher?

Salmon Egg - 22 Feb 2008 19:17 GMT Compared to Entourage, I find MT-NewsWatcher to have many more features that I like. (I am using OS 10.5.2.) Mostly, I have run into minor quirks that I can tolerate.
The one thing that is driving me crazy is that the application freezes when I respond to a post. The problem is with MT-NewsWatcher because a forced quit always seems to leave the system in good shape.
Am I doing something terribly wrong? What suggestions do you have for a better USEBET reader?

You might THINK it is MTNW that is the problem, but really, if it did that I would have noticed. A lot of people would have noticed.

You're runnings version 3.5.3b2, he's running 3.5.2. I don't know if that contributes to the difference, but he could easily find out.

I'm having problems with MTNW 3.5.3b2 in 10.5.2 as well. It crashes while it's quitting at random times. It says "Cleaning up" and then shuts down before it's finished and brings up the system message about shutting down unexpectedly. I push the "ignore" button, and it seems to be okay. It doesn't happen every time.
Sometimes MTNW crashes when I try to send an article which is annoying if I've spent some time composing some elegant and thoughtful prose for y'all to read. Well, that's not very often, I guess.
My update to 10.5.2 more-or-less coincided with my using a new NNTP server that uses a "secure connection," I don't know if the two things are related to these MTNW problems.
I don't want to use anything else, though, except maybe Gnus.

It doesn't happen every time. What I have done, is to copy the text of the message to the clipboard. Then, if I get a crash, I have the text available for a repost. Sometimes, the post is made before the crash (freeze). Nevertheless, it is most annoying.

I do the same thing the OP does: when I'm composing a longish post, I copy it to the clipboard once in a while, and before I hit the "post" button, so's not to lose it all if MTNW crashes. I hate having to be that paranoid.

Very full featured, configurable, stable, high-performance...and as F/OSS it's free.

With its pure heart of gold, that is to say Unix, there are so many excellent apps that can be run in OS X - The GIMP, Ardour2, Audacity, LyX, Scribus, Inkscape, OpenOffice.org/NeoOffice (native), AbiWord and countless more.
Two download and install systems have large application repositories and will take care of any dependencies while building the program package right on your Mac: Fink and Darwin Ports. I use the latter, and this page both shows you how little is involved in taking advantage of this as well as pan2 itself:

Have fun!

All of the MT-Newswatchers use polling threading rather than blocking threading for tasks. That means the threads run non-stop and 99.9999% of that time is spent discovering that there's nothing to do yet. The CPU consumption is especially bad on Intel systems. A few concurrent downloads will get the fans racing or run a laptop battery dead.

Top indicates that MT-NW is using between 2 and 10 percent of the cpu, while it's doing stuff. "Idle," it sits at about 3 percent. Is that considered excessive, or am I misreading the data (wouldn't be the first time). Top itself uses more than that.

I have found the NW acutally posts the message before it freezes!

Warren Oates - 23 Feb 2008 12:52 GMT > I have found the NW acutally posts the message before it freezes! Mine doesn't -- it crashes and goes away and doesn't post the message. This happens very rarely -- only twice I think since I started having problems. The other issue, where MTNW crashes while it's quitting and "cleaning up," happens about every third time I quit the app.
