I imported pictures and MPG's into Iphoto, but when I click on a movie, it opens Quick Time, but does not play the
movie. I also have VLC player on my system, but do not understand how to associate mpg and other movie formats to it, so
that when I click on a movie <avi, mpg, wmv> it will open VLC and play the movie. Any help appreciated.

First off, in general you shouldn't be putting videos in iPhoto (you
can, but it's somewhat pointless).

In the Finder, select an MPG and choose File->Get Info
The Info window appears. There's a panel in the Info window labelled
"Open With". Choose vlc from the popup menu (you might have to choose
"Other" and then navigate to vlc in the Open dialog that appears).
Click "Change All" and answer affirmatively to the dialog asking
whether you really want to associate all files of that type with vlc.

Maybe, but when iPhoto imports photos from my camera, it grabs the
videos right along with the stills.  It plays them just fine too, so
what makes it pointless?

iPhoto ignores movies on my camera; instead, iMovie grabs them, but only if
the camera is connected by firewire and is the only thing connected by
firewire -- must disconnect the drives.  Mine is a DV camcorder with a
separate SD card for stills; iPhoto does grab the stills, but only when
connected by USB.

That's a whole different thing.  Altogether.

The OP is talking about a still camera that also makes .mpg movies.

Surely you can't be serious.

It's not really pointless given the large number of digital cameras that
can create some amount of video footage, and given that Apple envisions
iPhoto as being the application that automatically handles importing
what's on your digital camera.

Bit my camera, which will take short clips of video, produces footage
that will open in the QuickTime Player and will not play in iPhoto.  So
for me, it is sort of pointless.  :-)

Err.. no, it's really not.

Front Row?  AppleTV?  iPod Sync?

Only if they are of the proper format (at least for the iPod), and
neither WMV or MPG qualifies in that regard. Some digitial cameras
produce iPhoto-compatible video files (for example, the ones taken by
my girlfriend's Kodak), but that's the reason for the "in general" in
my response. Even those videos, though, have to be converted to MPEG-4
for use with the iPod.

Usually, you'll get better results with the video in iTunes when it
comes to Front Row, AppleTV, or iPod than you will with the video in
iPhoto...that's even true for the video that iPhoto will handle. iTunes
really is Apple's preferred conduit to those applications and devices.

All that discussion aside, the OP's question (which  you trimmed from
this reply) was how to associate vlc with the various video formats and
that is to what the bulk of my reply (also trimmed) responded.

Erm.. never mind, I misread iTunes for iPhoto.

Damn glasses!

Thanks... I did all that, but when I click on a movie in Iphoto, it still brings up QT. Although, when I open up in a
sidebar and there is a movie folder and I click on a movie it opens with VLC. Do I have to show mivies froma folder and
not Iphoto itself ?

What kind of MPG?  Open it in QuickTime Player, press command-J, and
check the format.  If it's MPEG-2, buy Apple's "QuickTime MPEG-2
Playback Component".  It costs $20, and adds the ability to play MPEG-2
movies.

Apple made it an extra-cost add-on because they have to pay a licencing
fee for the MPEG-2 technology.
