If I buy an external drive, say a LeCie or whaterever it is called, will it
back up files on my windows partition, as well as my mac partition?

If you use the disk image method for your Fusion virtual machine, then
yes.  If you use a real partition on the HD instead, then I doubt it.

IIRC Carbon Copy Cloner can do a bitwise copy of your entire disk,
Windows partitions and all, if the two volumes are the same size.

I think I am using HD rather than disk image. How can I tell?

There is a program, "Winclone", in MacUpdate, to backup BootCamp
Windows HD partitions on a Mac. It is the only I know. I have not
tested or used, but it seems an interesting choice.

Do you have anything in the ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/ folder (~
stands for your home directory, /Users/you/)?
