Quicktime OS 9.2.2 question

Hi all, hope you can help me.

I'm trying to play some Quicktime tutorials in OS 9.2.2. My computer is
a G4 PCI 400 Yikes. QuickTime 6.0.3. I know, I'm in the dark ages. I've
tried and tried to upgrade to OSX but I can't.

When I try to play the movie the first time I get a Message: "Quicktime
is missing software required to display this movie file. Unfortuately
it is not available on the Quicktime server."
When I try the second time I get a Message: "You may experience
problems playing a video track because the required compressor could
not be found."

The audio plays fine but there is no video. I went to "get info" for
the movie and this is what I got.
Format: H.264, 960 x 540, Millions MPEG - 4 Audio, Mono, 44.1 kHz, 16
bits, (variable bitrate)

Am I missing a plug-in or something that can make this play? I don't
want to sound completely clueless, but...

Thank you for any help,

Betty

Go to your system folder and open the extensions folder, go down
to the qt ones and say which ones you have (are they all turned
on). If your list does not match mine, I might have to send you a
component.

But it looks like this particular movie is your problem and
advice of others, when I think about it, is right and you are not
missing components. Don't look in your System Folder now.

Hi dorayme,

These are all in a folder called QuickTime extensions in the extension
folder. (does that make sense?)

3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OS9
QuickTime Authoring
QuickTime Capture
QuickTime Effects
QuickTime Essentials
QuickTime Firewire DV
QuickTime Image
QuickTime Internet Extras
QuickTime Java Extras
QuickTime MPEG2
QuickTime MPEG4
QuickTime MPEG4 Authoring
QuickTime Music
QuickTime Player Extras
QuickTime QD3D
QuickTime Streaming
QuickTime Streaming Authoring
QuickTime Streaming Broadcast
QuickTime Streaming Extras
QuickTime VR Authoring
QuickTime Web Helper

And these are just in the extension folder

QuickDraw 3D
QuickDraw 3D IR
QuickDraw 3D RAVE
QuickDraw 3D Viewer
QuickTime FireWire DV Enabler
QuickTime FireWire DV Support
QuickTime
QuickTime MPEG Extension
QuickTime Musical Instruments
QuickTime PowerPlug
QuickTime VR

And they are all enabled, turned on.

Hope this helps

Looks like you have all the same as mine. (I had some prob once
and moved the MPEG2 to be loose in Extensions, but I doubt this
difference is relevant).

Perhaps time to move to X, Betty. I know, you had issues about
this. X needs lots of RAM and there may be limits on which
version of X for your machine. There are some really good people
who would be able to help you at

Thanks again. And thanks for the link. i will definitely check them
out.  I have 576mg of ram on my machine. I've tried taking ram out and
trying to find if there is one or two that are keeping OS X from
installing. I've tried anything that anyone suggested. I've spent days
on this, literally. I think I have some incompatible ram, but is it
worth spending the money on new ram for this machine? I don't think so.
I'm hoping my honey will get a new machine soon and I will inherit his,
complete with OS 10.3.9 or better. Until then I guess I'll just plug
along on this 'ole slug.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to help me.

Make sure you get a G4 if you are going to do MPEG-4. I have problems
with my G3 not even working with Quicktime 7.4 or 7.3 whatever is out
right now.  But G4's work...

If you were to run X, you are hampered enough with your machine's
limitations, it is important to have at least perfect RAM and
lots of it, at least a GB, and lots of room on a big HD.

But you are not wrong to save pennies for a more modern machine.
Even a QS 933 or a 2002 MDD would be good and getting cheaper by
the minute.

I think a mini would be a much better choice.  Even at the lowend, it
can handle most x264 content (it won't do 1080p very well if at all).

But a mini, by comparison, costs a fair bit doesn't it and then
what have you got? Something that is easily lost, easily trodden
on, unable to be opened and poked about with, and something that
seems ... a trifle undignified?

Too much unlike a Ford XY muscle car for my taste. I understand
you can't hear them either. That is hell of a creepy. Every
person has to ask themselves the question, do they want such a
sneaky thing around?

Like a robber pressing himself against the laneway wall outside a
bank, hoping not to be seen. Sly sly...

(btw, I noticed the 'old fashioned' torch... these days I have
moved over to LED torches. They are really something bright and
use about 15% less juice. You need all the brightness you can get
to hunt for minis - which tend to creep in in the middle of the
night).

h.264 is the the format, and that requires quicktime 7 or later.
however, 960x540 is a fairly big frame size and the computer may be too
slow to play the movie at a watchable speed.

quicktime 7 is all you need, but be aware that it might not play well,
and if you bought quicktime pro, you'll need to purchase it again.

I believe 7 is for OSX.

He is on an OS 9 machine so version 6 is the highest that will run on
that machine.

You are missing the H.264 codec, so the video cannot be played.
I don't know if H.264 exists for OS 9, probably not

good point.  quicktime 7 (which has h.264) specs say no os 9:
<http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html>

also, a 400mz g4 is not even close to being able to play a video with
that frame size.

Thanks, I will look for the H.264 codec. Can I find it by googling? But
I think you and no spam may be right. I need to upgrade quicktime and I
think when I tried to do that 6.0.3 was the last version that works in
OS 9.2.2. I'll go check again.

Thanks again, Betty

No freaking way.  Nope.  Nada.  Never going to happen.  Your machines
hasn't got a PRAYER of playing that file.  My iBook G4 (1Ghz?) can't
play x264 files. My G4 tower with the 2Ghz upgrade CPU can't play em.

Your husband must be mistaken, as I'm pretty sure Lewis is never wrong.

Maybe your husband only *thinks* his Mac is playing them, and Apple is
mistaken when they say "Internet-sized content (40kbps - 300kbps) will
run on the most basic of processors, like those in mobile phones and
consumer-level computers." at
<http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/h264/faq.html>

Because, as I said, I'm pretty sure that Lewis is *never* wrong.
Besides, who are you going to trust... Him or some rag-tag group of
hack programmers at Apple?

There is no way a AGP 450Mhz is playing that x264 file, which was no
where near 'internet sized content'.

We don't agree on much, Dave, but here I'm with you: Lewis has _never_
been wrong. He won't see this because I'm in his kill-file (I hope)
because, while he's never wrong per se as it were and to coin a phrase,
he's a humo(u)rless tree-hugger, who (did I mention) is never wrong.

I can play h.264 stuff on my ol' Sawtooth (1.6 processor). Maybe I'm
imagining it, and it never happened. I dunno. It won't play the 720p
stuff, though, jerks along unhappily.

Can't you tell? Isn't it a bit different to being outside? look
around, has it got what we might call facilities? (You know,
hanging hooks and chains and electrical outlets that don't look
normal, sort of heavy duty, for torture and like that?) Is it

Cool. I just watched Logan's Run. They escaped from the domed city
(which was kind of like a kill-file) and Peter Ustinov read some T.S.
Eliot, and then everyone escaped and then the place blew up and
meanwhile I got to see Jenny's boobs again.

Believe it or not, I actually went out with Jenny Agutter for a while in
1971; well, you probably won't believe it, but it's true. She was like
19 and I was like 23. Young hippy type was I. She went off to work on
something one day and met someone else. Shortly after that I did too.
Then she went off to Hollywood like they all do, these star-struck young
girls.

right?

I have seen her in Spooks.

So, Warren, this is the big year for you, 60 eh? From now on, you
will be looking at more pics of young female parts and less at
the real things...

Perhaps time at least to prepare to fall off the perch. The Dirty
Harry gun to the brains would be a manly thing to do. Hanging can
go wrong. Trust me, I know, I have tried both and the Harry is
best. Hate to spook you, but you must already know I do not speak

... me and Hunter Thompson. I dunno, it'd have to be painless. How much
Prednisone would I have to take? Should I be x-posting to
alt.suicide.methods. Really, though, I'm looking forward to just sitting
around and annoying people on the Internet full-time for a while.

Reason I said you wouldn't believe me, you have no reason to. I conceal
my real name, and I can make any claims about myself I want. I was born
in the wagon of a travelin show; I was behind that grassy knoll; I
played 2nd base for the Brooklyn Dodgers; I was a painter on the Sydney
Harbour Bridge; I was the drummer for Dr. Hook and so on; as long as
nothing's too outrageous, I can make someone believe just about any of
that. Well, I guess the grassy knoll's a bit outrageous, but not out of
the realm of possibility.
