Hi everyone.  I just installed GarageBand 2 (iLife '05) to experiment
with.  I'm using a Yamaha YPG625 kb connected via the usb midi port.
(Quicksilver G4, Tiger)

I can record the GarageBand Software Instruments just fine with the kb as
a controller.  But I can't figure out how to record the different sounds
from the keyboard itself.  If I select Real Instruments I can't enable the
track.  Does this mean that to use the build in sounds on the Yamaha (or
any other kb), I have to go through the audio input, rather than the
midi-usb?  Wouldn't seem to make sense to me.

If so, does a later version of GB "fix" that?

Thanks,
MK

I am quoting from Pogue's GarageBand Missing Manual (2004) (being just
too lazy to start up my GB and keyboard):

" Click the track you want to fill with music.
Remember, it must be a Software Instrument (green) track.
If you don't already have a green track ready to record, choose Track
->New Track to create one. In the New Track (Track Info) dialog box,
click the Software Instrument tab, and then choose the instrument sound
you want. Click OK.

Position the playhead to the spot where you want to begin recording.

Get ready to play - hands on the keyboard - and then click the red,
round Record button. Or just press the letter R on your Mac keyboard.

To stop the recording tap the spacebar."

If you read the original post you will see that he already knows how to
do that. He says "I can record the GarageBand Software Instruments just
fine with the kb as a controller. "

His MIDI keyboard is under software instruments. I have several fine
pianos (iPiano, no longer available as a set), that I can play with my
Keystation 49e. You follow the above procedure. It is confusing to call
it a software instrument, but it is.
Here are some samples with iPianos. Simply gorgeous.

OK, I am the OP.  Maybe I am missing something.  Let's say I want to use,
for example, voice number 68 on my Yamaha, which is like a jazz vocal
sound.  If I select that sound on the kb, which sound should I select
under "Software Instrument?"

Yes, I see. My system may be valid for the regular MIDI-keyboards but
it seems the Yamaha's are a class in their own.
So you have your own sound produced by the Yamaha and you want to
record this with Garagaband, right. In that case you do have a real
instrument.
Just thinking loudly now. You would have to record sound from outside,
so you would have to go to the prefs/audio-midi input. Set the audio
input to 'built-in input'. Then it should recognize your MIDI keyboard.
Maybe that depends on the driver or software you have with it.
Maybe you should set particular output preferences on your keyboard.
Maybe your computer has an audio line-in.
The garageband manuals I have only mention the recording as software
instrument.
Of course, you can record through built-in microphone in GB, or record
with other apps and then put the result in GB. Maybe recording with
Audio Hijack Pro will do the trick.
Now, when you create a real instrument track, still thinking loudly,
you would want to set in the monitor pop-up menu No Effects, I guess;
and for instruments you could experiment a bit with Basic Track or
other instruments.
If you choose jazz vocal sound on your keyboard I think you should
check setting as instrument 'Vocals' first. Though it may not matter
really. I hope you can get something working.

If you select Real Instrument, then you have to use audio input or a
firewire/usb mixer.
