I am thinking of letting my mac account lapse this year. It is pretty
expensive and I have alternatives available:- Digital Vault (I use bt
broadband)
- Gmail if I need imap BTYahoo if I do not.
- Flickr (I get a free pro account via BT) or Picasa
- Google Apps

Am I missing anything or does the above give me all that mac gives me?
Backup was the one thing but I have Tlme Machine now. Perhaps it is
just the tie in with the iLife apps that will be hard to replace.

I know this is a personal thing but I would appreciate any views.

Well, since you've done the research to look for alternatives you
obviously aren't satisfied with Apple's insulate-the-consumer model of
support.  I think of .Mac and AOL as the "Internet with training
wheels", but that's just me.  The .Mac services are integrated into all
the iLife applications which you've been finding alternatives for on
your own.  If it's easier for you to "roll your own" rather than use
Apple's, great.  Especially if $99/year is to expensive for you.  I pay
$30/month web hosting, $30/year for spam filtering, $50/month for
broadband.  But they're all business deductions.

If you have a web site and domain on .Mac, you may want to price out
alternatives.  It probably won't be free unless you want ads on your
site.  Also, certain .Mac web features may go way like contact forms and
page hit counters.

I just find the syncing and ease of use so handy that I consider .mac to
be one of the better solutions.  And since I don't need the space some
other hosts offer, it is really no more expensive than others would be.

I like the one-stop nature of it.

But to each his own.

I'm not as geeky as some but far geekier than many. I find the
cost/ease/feature ratios too good to pass up.

Same here. And it's not $99 as others have said, but $70 at Amazon.com.

It seems that Amazon's "amazing price" in the U.K. saves you a whole pound!

And here as well.  I make liberal use of the iLife programs
particularly iWeb and Ilike the convenience of one-touch posting of my
calendar online.

When I'm doing international travel it's been a real convenience using
the front end of dotmac for mail and having all the jillions of
bookmarks I use available on any browser.

On a few occasions I needed to have an list-serv type group initiated,
for a book group and such. Setting up was a snap, and so was taking it
down when the time came.

Though I have not yet investigated it, there are apparently options for
allowing access to your full and complete computer while you're on the
road, via any browser on any platform.  This demands dotmac.  I can't
recall what the program is named, as I'm rarely away from the house!
It demands Leopard.

Oops.  Forgot to mention the program FileChute (yellowmug.com).  I know
it's not a big program or anything, but it as been INVALUABLE to me in
swapping large files when I need to do it, without having to bungle
some web-based and/or subscription service to be able to do it
conveniently.

I hope to learn to use .mac better.    A year ago we got it for my
wife's computer to back-up documents.   I just got mine and the people
in the Apple Store said we didn't need the family version if I didn't
back up that much.    But every time I run backup from my computer I
get an abort.

A couple of times I've tried to put photos out on it to be shared by
my family.   One time I did it in such a way that it said users need
Macs to use it.

Twice I created web pages in Latin?    But when I went to my Mom's
computer and clicked on the link I sent her I got the web page without
any photos visible on it.

I guess I need to take one-on-one class, carrying a 24" iMac in. But
the photos are on her computer, not mine - maybe I need to lug both
computers in.

I might wait until I get the new router/disk drive though.

You can do that with .Mac?  The principle reason I run a mailserver in the
corner of my office is for running mailman.  But if the .Mac mail list
system is about the same quality as things like google groups or yahoo
groups then forget it.

Tough to simply tell you. I don't do much with it, I operate a list for
a monthly film group, and another for a group of mac-heads in Orange
County.  Doesn't take any labor at all from me.  They can all access it
on it's own little web-page blog if they like, or simply read the stuff
via email and respond that-a-way.  They ALL do the later.

The way they have the thing set-up though, you have a little web-page
related to the whole process, so you can have the lista-activity appear
there as a quazi-blog as well as announcements that aren't part of the
list, file storage (for reference pdf's group-related links, whatever).
I think it's pretty hip, but then they are small groups and everybody
is interacting solely via email.

There's probably something more illustrative in the mac docu pages, I'd figure

Back to my Mac.  I haven't played with it.  And frankly, I don't want to
run an externally visible server from my LAN.

I keep renewing my .Mac subscription for a couple of reasons. First, I
generally like Apple Mail, and it has worked well for me. However, the
main reason I use it is syncing the address books, calendars, bookmarks,
etc. on my 3 Macs. That is something that is invaluable for me. I also
find the off-site storage for backups to be useful, but syncing is the
big one for me.

I understand, although as far as Apple Mail is concerned, that nice app can
be used with any email provider I believe.

Me, too.  It's the syncing that I like, particularly with syncing
keychains now my passwords (via 1password) are stored in a keychain.

I also have a family account, which allows my daughter to use .mac for web
hosting.

How do you qualify Apple's quality of service (communication speed,
number of attempts necessary to download a big file, etc.) compared to
your alternatives?

It its quick enough for me then it is quick enough"-) That said I have
found mac mail slow at times, this may be as I'm in the UK. Apple's
Mail App does not seem as good as Entourage when running something like
Gmail imap but I do like Mail App.

I got sold Dot Mac when I bought my first Mac four years ago. Was
thinking of dropping it at the end of the first year, but kept it one
more year, basically because I was too lazy to move a few backups from
it.

For the past few years, I really have not seen any merit in retaining
Dot Mac for anything. Nothing spectacularly wrong with it (although
iDisk was way to slow to be any real use), but it just didn't seem to
provide good value. There seem to be free or cheap alternatives to
almost everything it provided.

You are right, there are free or cheap alternatives.  But none of them
offer it all in one spot, geared specifically for OSX users so well.  As
others mentioned, the syncing alone is very valuable, add in email and
all the other little things that make up .mac, and it is hard to beat at
any price, especially if you don't like to fiddle...
gtr - 28 Jan 2008 02:40 GMT
Another thought: One of the earlly reasons I got dotmac was that in
less than about 5 years I had to move from primenet to adelphia to
timewarner as they all hollowed themselves out, "failed" (on paper) and
then were absorbed.

Though only my address changes as I'm shuttled by timewarner to
roadrunner it's still a big pain in the a.s to tell my friends my new
annual address.  Using a name@mac.com consistently through the various
tortured changes of "corporate bankruptcy" and my own geographical
shifts--it's been a comfort over the past few years.

Yes = but you can do the same by buying your own domain name.

Of course, one could argue that *everything* is rented.   But
sometimes the difference is attitude - I plan on keeping my domain
longer than I plan on keeping the condo that pretend I own.

Quite true. Or start my own ISP.

As has been pointed out upstream, for every individual task or benefit
that dotmac provides there is a separate service, some with and some
without additional fees, that can replace them.

Get your own domain name.  Most registrars (I like Register4Less) will
have an email forwarding service that comes with the registration.  15 USD
per year ought to cover everything.

I got goldmark.org (I'm GOLDberg, my wife is MARKoczy and all forms of
"goldberg" where gone at the time) in 2000 in anticipation of a move from
England to California.  In California, I changed ISPs many times (often
because the ISPs changed under my feet).  Likewise, after moving from
California to Texas in 2005, I've been through a few.

Once I moved my mail hosting to whatever webhosting company I was using at
the time to fastmail.fm (2001?) every move or shift of provider hasn't
caused the slightest inconvenience with my email.

For a while I ran my own SMTP and IMAP server on a "virtual private
server" and do things exactly the way I want them done.  But I was just
too tempted to tinker with my own stuff without being as cautious as I
would be with other people's stuff.  So I kept on breaking my server in
various ways.  Now I have my really important stuff (my email) run by
professionals whose business depends on not messing things up.  And I run
a largely "toy" mailserver out of my house.

Cheers,

-j

You guys most have confused things.  I don't have a problem.  This has
been solved, as a number of other needs/problems related to back-up,
syncing, Web hosting, large-file relay, small list-serv operations and
so forth: I subscribed to dotmac.
