Recent Folders

gtr - 16 Dec 2007 17:43 GMT What I'd like to do, under Leopard, is have a folder in my doc that I can click on, have it fan out, and display the last bunch of folders I've recently modified, accessed or some subset of this.
I'm working on a project and keep drilling down five directories to a folder, and then in two other completely diverse locales. then I accidentally close one and have to drill down all over again, then I accidentally close the other folder. It's a real bother.
Seems I remember something like this, but would love to see a folder in the dock that allows this.

What about the Recent Folders menu in the Go menu? Or do those cycle too rapidly?

Drag it to the right side on the Dock.

WhateverYourhardDriveIsNamed/WhateverYourNameIS/Library/Recent Folders
or search for Recent Folders
or go to menu bar in Finder and follow Go>Go to folder.

I'm well aware of what the tilde means. I tried it as well as the directory you specified because it seemed clear that such a folder would have to be in the user's directory. I searched in both places, both using Finder and using "ls -a" from the terminal, and I haven't found anything. I did find "Recent Servers", but not "Recent Folders".

I'm using 10.5.1

This is the kind of thing smart folders were designed to do - why not just use that??

Sorry I'm no help. Weird it is.

gtr - 17 Dec 2007 16:57 GMT >>>>> What about the Recent Folders menu in the Go menu? Or do those cycle >>>>> too rapidly? [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > > = Steve = Well I DID find such a directory and dragged it to the dock and it worked hunky dory.
Curious though, it has folders I haven't accessed in many months. Maybe six. And few of the ones I've accessed recently.
I cleared the aliases out of the directory. And no new ones have been added to the dock's folder, though I've accessed many new folders.
So though there is a "recent folders" directory and folders accessible through the "Go" drop-down, they don't seem to be related.

My guess, then, is that this is an artifact from an upgrade...guessing that your machine used to run Tiger. In my case, I'm running a shiny new MacBook Pro which came with a Leopard CPU drop-in DVD, and I did a clean install of Leopard before ever using it.

That would explain my Mac since I did a reformat and clean install or Leopard. But my daughter's intel iMac used to run Tiger.

I did an upgrade install from Tiger and I don't have the Recent Folders folder.
Furthermore my account descends from an account on Jaguar. It's been update installs through Tiger and to my current machine via Migration Assistant to the most recent update install from Tiger to Leopard. The only time I ever did a clean install was with Jaguar.

If you *know* the folders you expect to access, you could create a new folder with aliases to the ones you want, and put tht in the Dock.
Trouble with Recent Folders is that it might show some other items you have looked at recently and crowd out the one you want.

Yeah, but I don't. I have new folders I'm dealing with quite regularly.

I had a vague feeling that Recent Folders did not necessarily show the most recent items, but selected them in alphabetical order from a larger list. But his may only hold for AppleWorks, where I know I had to add a script to the Recent Items folder to get the actual recent ones.

My criteria is Kind=Folder, Last Opened Date is within last 1 day. But it doesn't bring up the last three folders I opened. Ah, I figured it out: It doesn't trap any folders that were opened via hot-key, only those double-clicked with a mouse or with apple-o.
And no fan display in the dock; you have to click it to open it then go to the faux folder now opened and select the desired folder.

I'd consider that a bug if I were you. You may want to file a bug report to make Apple aware of the issue.

Additionally, it should be "actually make it work" instead of "make it actually work" too.
Moving on to the next sentence...

Writing well is important, but one really needs reading to complete the process.
