Mail App problem with PW

My POP server keeps rejecting my password and asking me to re-enter it,
which I do. I always check the box reading: "Remember PW in my
Keychain" but obviously my Keychain never remembers, since this dialog
keeps popping up.

Very annoying. Is there anything I can do about it?

Could you clarify a little? Is your server rejecting your password
outright, or is keychain just randomly forgetting it? If the server is
just rejecting the password, what keychain is doing is normal; it
won't store incorrect passwords (in Mail, at least).

The problem isn't with the POP server, it's Mail's brain-dead way of
saying "I can't connect with the server right now but don't have any
way to tell you."

File a bug report and maybe Apple will fix this some day.

This is not true.  If Mail can't connect with the server it gives a
different error.  What the above means is "I can connect, but login
failed, and don't know why."

The problem is that the POP protocol doesn't provide a way to
distinguish different types of errors.  If the server reports an error
after the client sends the username and password, Mail.app assumes that
the problem is with the username or password, and asks you to re-enter
them.  But it could be that there's a problem with your POP account, or
the server might be undergoing maintenance.

Along with the nondescriptive error code, the POP protocol includes a
textual description of the problem.  Mail's only real fault in this
regard is that it doesn't display this text when it reports the error.
I can partly understand this, as these messages can often be pretty
cryptic, like "box locked".  But omitting them entirely leaves users
totally in the dark, so it can't really be preferable.

The only way to discover this is to run a packet capture program like
tcpdump or Wireshark and look at the messages going back and forth.

My ISP requires that I re-enter my password every two weeks.

I used to have your problem when I was running Panther but after
installing Leopard (a reformat & clean install), I no longer have the
problem.

Thanks to all who replied. To clarify, I get this dialog randomly‹not
when I connect, or when I wake the computer in the morning, but "out of
the blue". I am working on something else, and suddenly I notice my
mail icon is popping up and down in the dock. I investigate and find
this dialog again. I then re-enter my PW and all is good‹until the next
time.

You obviously have Mail running in the background, and it's set to check
for new mail every few minutes.  If the server reports a problem during
one of these checks you'll get this pop-up.

You don't have to re-enter your password, just click the "Cancel"
button.  It will continue to use the password that's saved in Key Chain.

Thanks Barry. Good tip; never thought of that.

I got rid of Mail.app for this same reason and was sick of not getting
any replies to my emails from Apple so I went with Eudora. Was happy
with it on my Perfoma and iMac before I got my iBook G4.
