You can do this:
Make sure you have "Show mailboxes" on. (This should be on by
default).
Click the plus (bottom left corner), and make a new Smart Mailbox,
name it "Unread"
In the drop down menu choose "Message is Unread", and click OK.
All your unread messages will be in there (as well as in you inbox)
and will be removed from there once they are read.
Simply highlight them all, right click and open.
Whenever you open multiple messages, they will always open in a
diagonal stack with the oldest in front.
That's the simplest solution I found.

I've found a way of keyboard working that is almost as convenient.
