Need PS Elements 3 and 4 help

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 doesn't run under Leopard and I am
seeking a replacement.  Elements 3 and 4 look like they will do what I
need.

Problem:  Apparently Elements 3 and 4 have restrictions on the
processing of images of bank notes.

I collect bank notes from around the world and used Elements 2 for the
purposes of cataloguing my collection and for selling notes on eBay.

Originally I had heard that Elements 3 and 4 would not open bank note
images at all, but I have heard rumours that they will open but not
print, maybe allow saves but maybe not, that v.3 is more restrictive
about this than v.4, etc.  Info about this for Windows versions of
Elements is more widely available, including a patch floating around
various torrent sites.  But details about Mac versions seems to be
hard to find.

So please do me a favour, Elements 3 and 4 users.  Scan some modern
bank notes (CAD, EUR, USD, GBP, JPY, CHF, etc, anything from 2000 or
newer)  Or try looking at http://coins.ebay.com for paper money
auctions and use the images there.

Or you can use this image taken from a British bank note:
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/projects/currency/eurion-no1.png

Let me know if Elements 3 and 4 will allow 300 and 72dpi scanning,
simple processing (resizing, etc).  I don't need to print.

In an earlier thread, somebody showed me a workaround using the full
version of Photoshop.  But I can't afford to buy the full version, so
that won't work for me (Thanks anyway, Dave.)

Thanks a lot for any help.

Interesting.  I didn't think that showed up until after Elements 4.

*After* Elements 4?  Elements 4 is the current version.  It came out in
2006.

Yeah, the articles I read were Windows-centric, the Windows version is
up to Elements 6, and I could have sworn that limitation was added to
Elements 5.  I'm probably off by a version.

I have Elements 3 for Mac, let me check it out.

Ouch.  That sucks.  It pops up a dialog box saying it won't process bank
notes and asks if you want to view a web page for further details.

Okay, thanks Greg.  v.3 is out then.  Too bad; I can get it for much
cheaper than v.4.

Anyone have v.4 to test?

I was going to say that I'm pessimistic about your endeavor but I opened
the same image in CS3 with no problems.  I sharpened it a little, saved
it, but it won't print on either my Brother HL-5250DN (funny, who would
try to pass of a b&w bank note?) nor my Epson P2200.

Go to your favorite store where Macs are sold and ask for a demo.

I actually went to three of them today!  All of them had sealed
copies of Elements v.4 for sale, but none would let me demo it first
before buying. And while Adobe offers an evaluation download for the
Windows version of PSE, there's none for the Mac version.  Pox on Adobe
(and on all developers!) who don't offer evaluation versions of their
software.

Perhaps I will download a pirated version for evaluation before deciding
to buy it or look for another program.  Too bad if I have to do that.
But I won't spend a non-refundable $100 on anything if I'm not 100% sure
that it will do what I need it to do.

I do heartily thank those who have tried out theirs at home and reported
back to me.

Have you checked out the application GraphicConverter it has many
features for handling images it might just do what you want.

Yes, and while it is a very useful app, it's not really a replacement
for Photoshop Elements.  The two apps are horses of different colours.

GimpShop, then...?

I can't get GimpShop to run on my Mac.  If I launch it it hangs at the
"caching fonts..." window for about a minute, and then quits
unexpectedly.  Same thing in other user accounts.  I reinstalled X11
from my Leopard install disc, still no go.  Running 10.5.1 on a 1.25GHz
G4.  Any ideas?

This message is written to the crash log:

Dyld Error Message:
 Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
 Referenced from: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.2.dylib
Reason: Incompatible library version: libXft.2.dylib requires version
3.0.0 or later, but libfontconfig.1.dylib provides version 2.0.0

Anyone tried opening/processing banknote images with Elements v.4 yet?

Apparently, it's looking at a version of the library _inside_
Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/lib/ before using the system-installed
libraries. You'll probably have to edit the startup script, or remove
that library from the app package (at your peril, make a backup first),
or tinker with DYLOAD_LIBRARY_PATH (or whatever), or try:

Fraid not... I've only ever used gimp.app, which isn't tweaked to look
like Photoshop.

Can't you use iPhoto for cataloging your collection?  I just scanned a $20
bill and imported it into iPhoto with no problem.

iPhoto includes simple processing, but not resizing.  Photoshop Elements does
that, but I can't test if it rejects bills because I just upgraded to Leopard
and my old Photoshop Elements v 2 won't run in this OS.

I have a different program that I use for cataloguing, it's a program
called iCollect that is specifically for bank note collectors.

But I'm still looking for an all-in-one app that will allow scanning and
editing of bank notes images, and for some light duty image editong
work.  Elements 2 did everything I needed it to do.  For now I am
rebooting into a Tiger partition and using Elements 2 there.  I might
just keep doing that if Elements 4 doesn't work out.

I haven't looked hard at GimpShop, but I'm not thrilled about it running
in X11 instead of Aqua.  I'll take a closer look at it.

Someone gave a demo of a Photoshop-like $60 program called Pixelmator at
a MUG meeting last night.  I just downloaded a copy, scanned a $20 bill,
and was able to manipulate and print the image, so this is definitely
something you should look at:

http://www.pixelmator.com/

It doesn't appear to be TWAIN-compliant, though, or support PS plug-ins,
so I had to scan first, then open the document with Pixelmator.
