Setting a birthday alarm in iCal

I haven't been able to figure out how to set an alarm on a "birthday
event" which is automatically picked up from an Address Book entry.

When I open the Info pane on a B-day event, there's no alarm option
showing.

I can set a second event on the same day and alarm that, but that
strikes me as pretty stupid.

Anybody know how to do this?

Its easy. Just select the address book entry you want to modify and then
pull down the menu labeled "card" and then go to "add field" and
birthday is one of the options.

Nice answer; wrong question. you told how to add a field to an Address
Book card.

what I want to do, though, is add an alarm to the iCal entry that can
result from the addition of that field. I want iCal to send me an e-mail
two days before a birthday.

I don't think AB has this built-in, but I've seen some
freeware/shareware apps that do it.  Go to VersionTracker and search for
"birthday".

iCal and  Addressbook work together. I always send myself a reminder.
Works everytime.
Open ICalendar, make a date so to speak then in icalendar click on
event til you see a list of things like Copy,Cut,etc. Mail this event
is the last one on the list. I will ask what app to use . Click on
Addressbook.

When I select Mail Event, it automatically goes to Mail.app and creates
an email with the event as an attachment, it doesn't ask me what app to
use.

I see your point. I just googled for "iCal birthday reminder" and I
found a tip by Chris Breen on MacWorld's web site that might meet your
needs.

Go to the link

then scroll down to the "remember birthdays" section.
