I recently got a new MacBook Pro running Leopard and I'm getting
adjusted to some of the numerous changes from years of using my trusty
PowerBook G4/800, most recently in 10.4.11, to this shiny new toy.
I long ago stopped keeping my versions of StuffIt Deluxe current, and so
there's no StuffIt on the new machine. But I came across a file
recently which was BinHex (with the .hqx extension), which was handled
fine by the system, but it wouldn't touch the .sit file left behind.
Anybody care to offer a suggestion?

The Stuffit Expander for Mac OS X is available from VersionTracker
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/182>.

Gee...I should've known that! :-)
I kept StuffIt Deluxe installed for so many years that I completely
forgot that they offered this one for free. Thanks.

Well, there's Unarchiver but, since I haven't run across any Stuffit
files lately, I don't know if it works in Leopard. Or there's free
Stuffit Expander if you can find it on that ghastly website of theirs...
leastways it was last I looked. I used to use MindExpander before OS X.
Too bad that doesn't seem to be around anymore. It was great.

Unarchiver does work in Leopard. It can handle the .hqx files just fine
as well as .sit files. It will not handle .sitx files to the best of my
knowledge.

It certainly does work on .sit and .SIT files - I put it on my MacMini
just to handle a Stuffit archive I was sent.

If you have a Panther install disk, you can install stuffit from there.

I'm still using Stuffit Deluxe 7 on my MacBook Pro with Leopard (but its
Magic Menu is long gone, and I eventually ditched its contextual menu
plugin). If necessary, I can install a later version of the free StuffIt
Expander, but I have yet to encounter any reason to do so.
I didn't see any point continuing to feed Aladdin or subsequent owners
of Stuffit by paying for upgrades to Deluxe which seemed to serve no
useful purpose, especially as the .sit format was waning in popularity.

That was essentially my thinking, though I continued purchasing Deluxe
up through version 8 instead of stopping at 7. :-)

BOMAArchiveHelper will do this. It is in your Applicationsfolder/
Utilties Folder. I had a question about this and my brother told me
about BOMA. But also said to download stuffit just in case.

Drag it to the trash. If you're feeling particularly kind, let the
developer know that you'd appreciate a release that actually supported
Mac OS X.
