Simon Fraser - 02 Dec 2007 03:48 GMT I've made available a beta release of MT-NewsWatcher, version 3.5.3b1, which fixes a number of Leopard compatibility issues. It's available from:
http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/downloading.html
Fixes in include: Improved typing performance by not flushing the graphics port on every caret blink. Greyscale images now display correctly. Fixed authentication issues when not saving the password in Keychain Fixed the display of the help images on Intel machines. Fixed a hang on 10.5 when extracting binaries on showing a "Choose folder" dialog (and some other related hangs). Fixed a hang on 10.5 after posting a message (deadlock when destroying the spell checker object).
Please let me know if you run into any issues with this version.

This on OS 10.4.x - whatever was current. Any change there?
It's interesting that with all the web-based forums, I still find much more expertise on usenet, and look at over 20 newsgroups every day, as well as specific visits to others as needed. Thanks again for your fine contribution to the community.

The authentication issue (mail not being sent from a post but posting to usenet going through) is resolved in 3.5.2 by changing the settings in Personalities> Mail Server to Authentication: None. Or something in those settings like that.

Wayne C. Morris - 02 Dec 2007 17:12 GMT > Is this the best newsreader for Mac, as I am a new convert, and have been > using Forte Agent ? "The best newsreader" is a hotly debated topic. MT-NewsWatcher, Unison, HogWatcher, and Soup are all popular choices. Which one you like will depend mostly on whether you prefer to have one big window divided into panes, or a bunch of separate windows; MT-NW uses the latter style. Newsreaders also differ in how they deal with downloading binaries and using accounts on two or more news servers, and again, it's mostly a question of what you want it to do, not whether it's "good" or "bad".
grandpamike - 02 Dec 2007 17:38 GMT Thanks for your reply. I guess I will have to try a few to see what I like. As I said, I use Forte Agent, and it has the three pane view which I have gotten used to.

I also greatly prefer MT NewsWatcher. Some advantages over Unison: * Filtering is much easier to use yet very powerful. You can easily: ** Highlight or kill a topic or author ** Set the scope of a filter (meaning which newsgroups it covers) ** Set the duration of a filter (e.g. 2 weeks after last use) * You can fetch messages from all subscribed newsgroups at once if you like (though it limits the number of connections to avoid overloading the server). This makes reading faster. Unison only allows fetching messages from one group at a time. * It is much easier to manage groups because you can subscribe/unsubscribe using drag and drop. * It is much easier to use multiple newsreaders (I use gmane in addition to a server of normal news); Unison supports it, but in a rather clumsy way.
On the other hand MT NewsWatcher crashes often for me (even the new version, alas). Something about SSL. Save often when posting. If not using SSL then don't worry about it.

The unfortunate flip side is that the management window given with Show Group Filters is *tiny* and cannot be resized. It's a real pain to have, as I do, hundreds of filters with MT-NewsWatcher.

Window menu, "Show Filters List". Wacky! I knew that another window came up when you selected a filter directly from an article window, but I never noticed that menu item before. Any chance you could unify to that one style? And while I'm making filter requests, I would *really* like to see a "Save and Apply" button in the creation dialog that simply uses the new filter on the current group. Having to select the Refilter Articles menu can be a pain, especially when it takes a long time to apply *all* the filters to *all* the articles.

I use 2 servers and I'm always hitting cmd-Y/tab/cmd-Y. I can't seem to make an Applescript to do that and often it's easiest to just quit and relaunch MT.
But *Thank you* Simon for fixing the inline grayscale images. I can now see the xrays sent to me.

John Varela - 04 Dec 2007 19:54 GMT > "The best newsreader" is a hotly debated topic. MT-NewsWatcher, Unison, > HogWatcher, and Soup are all popular choices. I chose Hogwasher because it has better filters than the other newsreaders I looked at.
I do not recommend it.
It crashes a lot. It appears to crash merely because there are too many messages in a thread and some table is overflowing (I subscribe to a couple of news groups that tend to have hundreds of messages in one thread). In some cases it appears to crash because a particular message has something in the header that Hogwasher can't deal with -- and the longer the thread, the greater the likelihood that a problem header will be posted.
I reported these problems to the developer but there didn't seem to be much interest in maintaining the program.
Another problem with Hogwasher and long threads is that the thread display won't go more than 32 replies deep.
Hogwasher won't let me set up an outgoing mail server unless I also set up an incoming server, but I don't want to use Hogwasher as my mail program. Therefore I can't respond by mail to a news group posting unless I cut and paste into Mail.

When trying to access a SSL-secured newsgroup I get a -9824 error. This same group works with Thunderbird and NewsmanPro (on WinXP).

This is a "errSSLPeerHandshakeFail" error, which suggests that perhaps the server has a non-verifying certificate; it may have expired. Is this a server I can test?

These posts can be read by using save as and an editor to delete the ads, but that seems more user work than many are willing to do.
Thanks for your continued maintenance of MT-NW.
