printing Christmas envelopes

I made the leap from Windows & Outlook to a MacBook Pro over the
summer.  It's time for Christmas cards again, I've entered addresses in
the Address book for everybody - well sort of.  For a family, I use
"John & Debbie" instead of creating two cards.  So how do I print the
envelopes?  I would think this would be a common operation, no doubt
the answer is staring me in the face but I'm missing it.

I thought I could use Applescript, but I couldn't make heads or tails out of
the pair of books I got.   I no longer remember enough details to make a
reasonable attempt at reconstruction of my feeble attempt.  I couldn't get
the recorder to actually produce anything.

I hate to follow up on my own posts, I realized that I should say what I was
looking for...

If the name and address are John & Debbie Smith, 1313 Mockingbird Lane,
etc.  I was hoping for:

The Smith Family
1313 Mockingbird Lane
etc.

How much work is that?  Googlng for Mac addressbook, etc. got me nowhere.
Of course, any help is appreciated.

There is a widget Easy Envelopes from Ambrosia Software that works for
me. Not sure if that is what you are asking or not.

I second the motion.  I've been using the Easy Envelopes widget for a
while, and it is EASY.  I was having problems getting all the settings
correct to print envelopes from NeoOffice, but Easy Envelopes works very
nicely.  You can send to any address you like, but it has a built-in
search of the Apple address book that can automatically get addresses
from there.

Of course, you can always print envelopes from Address book directly; no
importing needed.

I third the motion. My dad wants to do the same thing on my old iMac.
Can't find labels. I couldn't either, lol.

Shouldn't cards be personal? Hand write the addresses.

Indeed. And instead of using the impersonal U. S. Postal Service, a really
thoughtful person will _hand-deliver_ all of his Christmas cards as well.

At one time there were significant numbers of people who complained
about the impersonal nature of printed Christmas cards - with
hand-written notes and such.   Hallmark was a target of their
accusations of destroying Christmas.      But such conservative values
get forgotten by the next generation who have their own concept of
Rightness.

Thanks for the tip about Ambrosia.

I wish I could write the addresses, I do write notes/letters inside.
However, my writing can be poor at times & I want the card to
actually show up to it's destination in Myrtle Beach, SC,
Louisville, KY, Toms River, NJ, etc.  Making the post office
decode my writing means it could get delayed/mis-directed.
This also means I can spend more time writing the inside
note.

My cousin (Atlanta, GA) sends out a news letter every Christmas
with hand written envelopes.

I've installed Easy Envelope and I love the interface.  Unfortunately
it doesn't do quite what I was looking for.  For example, John & Debbie
have two kids, Megan and Grant.  The address book entry is
_John & Debbie_  _Smith_ (how to signify John & Debbie are both
contained in "First"?)...  That's why I was looking for The Smith Family.

There is no time like the present to put your address book into a
usable state then.  That sounds like the real problem? I doubt there is
any program that can do what you want because a program can not know
what you want done and how.

On the PC I could do this with a kluge called Mail Merge...
Open MS Word, use Tools -> Mail Merge, fool with this
tool for what seemed like an eternity (put "The " on the
first line, then the last name, etc.)  Mail Merge was
really designed to send out form letters
"Dear Mr/Mrs. Smith are your insurance rates to high?"

It was possible, but it was a pain in the butt!
