Upgrading from IPhoto 2.0

Hi!

I am new to this forum, but I hope someone can help me.  I purchased
my Ibook in 2004. I am using Mac OS X v.10.3.9 and running 640 MB RAM.

To this point, the computer has served me well, although I realize it
is a bit outdated.  Recently, my wife and I have been compiling
wedding and family pics with IPhoto (v. 2.0) and want to make albums
for us and family for the holidays.  To my surprise, I cannot even
publish albums anymore with this version of Iphoto.

I looked into Ilife 08 but my system wont support it without Leopard.
Of course my system also wont support Leopard without upgrading it,
which I would rather not spend money on at this time.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience something similiar?

Any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you,
Jason

If you mean publishing to a .Mac account, it shouldn't be too surprising
that Apple no longer supports such an old version of iPhoto.

That's odd, since Tiger, not Leopard, is required for iLife '08 on
everyone else's Macs, and iLife '08 shipped months before Leopard did.

You didn't say _which_ iBook you have, but it's likely an iBook G4 based
on when you bought it, and you have more than the minimum required RAM
already.  Other than that, the only issue is processor speed, and either
yours is the required 867 MHz or faster or you can't upgrade at all.

Even if you don't want to upgrade to Leopard, you can certainly find a
copy of Tiger at a good price, and you can also find a copy of iLife
'06, which wouldn't require upgrading your Mac OS at all.

Thanks for the reply, I did forget some details.

It is an Ibook G4.  And I meant to write Tiger not Leopard (I get my
Felines confused).

With an Ibook G4 and 640 MB Ram and 1 GHZ Processing Speed.  Is that
enough for Tiger?

Thanks again!
Jason

Heck, I already told you it's enough for Leopard, which requires 512MB
RAM and an 867MHz or faster G4 processor.  Tiger requires only 256MB RAM
(although you'd want at least 512), any G3 or G4 processor, and built in
FireWire ports, which of course your iBook G4 has.

Sorry, just making sure.

Appreciate the help.

Thanks

iLife '08 works fine under Tiger, too, just not 10.3. On the off chance
you don't want Leopard and can get Tiger.

Whatever you do, you *really* want to increase your iBook's memory.

Your cheapest option at present is to buy a copy of iLife '06 from
somewhere (probably secondhand), and hold off on other upgrades. It will
run on your existing operating system and memory.

You will probably find that iPhoto 6 will run slower than iPhoto 2
unless you add more memory.

To finish off that point (from further information elsewhere in the
thread):

Given you have 640 MB of RAM and a 1 GHz iBook G4, you must have the
first generation 14" iBook G4. It has 128 MB of memory built in and a
single slot which can accept anything up to 1 GB memory module.

You currently have a 512 MB memory module in that slot, so replacing it
with 1 GB will almost double your memory. This will make iPhoto run a
lot more smoothly and make later operating system versions (10.4 or
10.5) run better.

The type of memory you need is a PC2100 (DDR266) SO-DIMM. You can also
use a PC2700 (DDR333) SO-DIMM, but it won't run any faster.

Have a look at a source such as http://www.macsales.com to get an
indication of memory prices.

You could spend the extra money on upgrading your operating system
and/or memory but it might be better to save that money towards a new
computer, which will come with more memory, a newer operating system and
a newer version of iLife.
