Yes - I did get a first response, and I am tracking what happened.
It seems genuine iTunes gift certificates do not expire, but I had
bought the codes through a customer loyalty programme in Switzerland.
The points there are freely tradeable and transferrable and have a
standard price.
As of now it seems they do indeed buy codes, and Apple only charges them
for what gets redeemed within a certain period. So it is not Apple
making the extra profit but the store (similar to Safeway for example).
Exactly the same as the promotion codes in beverages' caps etc except
that payment for these codes is similar to a credit card.
I will followup when I have the details. It looks like I have been
barking up the wrong tree.

So it's the loyalty points that have expired?

No, the iTunes credit (30 songs) I got for the points :-(

So they expire after six months? Well, I suppose that is rather brief
(most similar things I'm aware off expire after a year), but I don't
know ANY iTunes users whose points would survive longer than a week. I'm
not sure I understand what you're getting so annoyed at. If you never
wanted to use the points what loss is losing them? :-D

You seem to know one of them now :-)

My son just tends not to use them that fast ;-)

Heh, your son shows rather astonishing restraint :-) Well if I were
Apple I'd be making damn sure consumers know when their points expire.
Was there any notification process? No emails? No pop-up warning in
iTunes? It seems rather rude just to expire them suddenly with no
warning :-(

Check with whatever consumer protection agency has jurisdiction and see
if it's legal for Apple to do this.

I received three gift certificates a while ago for the iTunes store. I
entered them onto my account right away so I didn't have to keep track
of the plastic gift cards. Months went by and I forgot about them. I
eventually received email from Apple reminding me, so I logged on and
bought some TV shows and music with them. I have never had a problem
with unexplained funds disappearing from the ITMS.
