Simple CAD software available?

I'm looking for an easy to use CAD program as I occasionally need to
draw something technical with dimensions etc. Nothing overly
complicated, but Photoshop elements just doesn't cut it. It's probably
better suited for photos as the name suggests.

I've tried several Mac CAD applications including Google Sketchup,
CADintosh and a few others, but they're mostly too complicated to
figure out without investing a lot of time or they're not suited for
the kind of thing I'm looking for. And then there's a whole lot of CAD
software I haven't even considered because of their cost.

Have you looked at Punch?:

Looks like a great application, but way beyond my needs and I don't
even know if it's suitable for my use.
I want to make simple technical drawings such as this:

No 3D or fancy features. Just something I can draw mainly squares,
rectangles etc. add dimensions etc.

sketchup is amazingly easy to use - I run it on an iBook G4, 800 MHz and
did all the drawings with the trackpad only (and iScroll !)

It's very straightfoward to use. However, it's mainly a 3D program. It
offers a 2D mode. But it's not made for this.

I wanted to do some simple drawings recently - nothing what I'd name
'CAD', but draw only. I loved MacDraw.

But I did not find anything like that for the Mac yet. OmniGraffle is
powerful, but I feel it's the overkill here. Drawing form OpenOffice was
rather clumsy. Drawing from AppleWorks was completely broken. I did not
like EazyDraw that much.

For 2D CAD I liked cadintosh, for drawing I prefer Intaglio

Any other recommendation?

Have a look at Cadintosh, from Lemke Software, who also produce
GraphicConverter, the swiss army knife of images for the Mac:

In the OP's original post, he said Cadintosh was "to much" for him.
With all the options that have been thrown around here, I'm beginning to
think a trip to the local stationary store for a Pink Perl, T-square,
and HB mechanical pencils is all this guy can deal with.

For price, it's hard to beat qcad, http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad_order.html
I happen to not like it, as it's based on an AutoCAD-style interface
and I was enlightened by exposure to Ashlar's Vellum 2d-system first.

It's probably out of your price range, but it wouldn't hurt to call
Ashlar and see if they're offering any incentives or rebates (I got
in on a crossgrade deal from InCAD, a failed attempt at solid modeling
back in the early 90's)

Good luck in your search, please post back here if you find something good!

Intaglio, the best user interface since MacDraw, and a lot of power
anyway: http://www.purgatorydesign.com/Intaglio/index.html

How about Omnigraffle?  It's kind of like a Visio. It came bundled
on my G4 Powerbook.

Cheers, Liam

Yes, I have a G4 Powerbook as well and got Omnigraffle with it.
Looks very nice, but isn't this more for flowcharting and stuff like
that?

What's your cost limit?

If it isn't out of your price range PowerCADD <http://engsw.com/> is a
great 2D CADD and drawing program. At $995 it might be too costly though.

I had wanted to buy it when I was a student, when the cost was about
1/2. There was no upgrade path though so I skipped it and got the
academic version of VectorWorks for about $150. VW is a nice CAD program
but way overkill with a complicated interface.

When I upgrade to an MacIntel Octo I'll buy PowerCADD. There's a demo
which might make you want it regardless of the price.
