Can you close a window in Safari 3?

I have G4 PB running 10.4.9, just got Safari 3 Beta.

Many cool features, except one: I can't get rid of any window without
quitting Safari itself. I can delete tabs, but not a window itself.

Tried Cmd-w, File -> Close window, etc., but nothing happens.

Anyone else seeing the same problem?

Nope. Works normally here, except there was a warning when you close a
window with muliple tabs open, but you can turn that off.

Where can you turn it off?  I can't find the option or selection.

But I notice that the History menu now has "reopen last closed window"
and "Open all windows from last session" commands.

In preferences, under "Tabs". Uncheck "Confirm when closing multiple
pages.

Yeah, that's cool too.

Thanks.  I don't know how many times I've looked at that without seeing
it.  *sigh*

Incidentally, there's also a warning when you close a window in which
you've entered text in a field. Nice feature, that.

I haven't.  I can close any window I want.

Same here.

Thanx Joe, Michelle and Nadia:

I even re-downloaded and reinstalled Safari 3.0 Beta on my G4 PB/ OSX
10.4.9. Still can't close a window by Cmd-w, by File -> Close window,
or by hitting the button at upper left corner. Nothing works.

I can minimize the window, close tabs, etc., but not close an open
window.

The only thing unusual I can think of is I had Pith Helmet. It doesn't
work now and every time I start safari I get a notice that it is not
being loaded. Don't know if that interferes with something.

Does anybody have Pith Helmet? G4 PB with 10.4.9? I would love to
diagnose and get rid of this problem!

Pith Helmet always, and IIRC intentionally, stops working after at least
the major Safari updates. That might be an interesting candidate.

I have PithHelmet installed.  It doesn't function with the Safari 3.0
beta, but it's causing any of the problems here that you've had.  It
simply does not load.

What happens when you create a new user account and launch Safari 3.0
from that account?

OK, that seems to rule out one candidate.

Same problem, which does not surprise me as they are using the same
Safari, which is in /Applications not in any user folder.

It doesn't SEEM TO rule it out, it rules it out.

It's a common troubleshooting method to try a problematic app from
another user account, because a problem in a user Library file can cause
an app to misbehave from that one account only.  This is not a rare
thing.

If more than one tab is open, command-W will close the tab, not the
window.  The only ways to close a window with multiple tabs is to click
the red button in the upper-left corner and to choose Close Window in
the File menu.  I have not had that fail yet on any version of Safari.

As I understand it, the current version of Pith Helmet is not compatible
with Safari 3.

I haven't had that fail in *any* application so far until now in Safari
3.0 Beta. It is as if nothing happens. The window remains there and
usable.

If I open a page in a window, the only way to delete it is to open a
new tab (even if it is empty). Then the *tab* belonging to the previous

page can be deleted.

It may be an application-focus problem.

When I first launched it, iChat was in the process of launching, and
something glitched.  iChat was the active application (as indicated by
the menubar) but Safari's window was topmost.

Many things (including non-responsive keyboard shortcuts) were acting
weird.  Switching away to another app and back again (using CMD-Tab or
the Dock) fixed that problem.

I have that same problem and I've read all the suggestions here, none
of them help. To recap, I've tried
-Cmd+W
-Clicking the red circle in the top left
-File > Close window
-Switching to another app, switching back to Safari and trying all
again
-Turning off mult tab warning and trying again
-Creating a brand new user account and trying all options in there.
-Uninstalling and reinstalling Safari

I'm convinced it's a bug.

Here's my system info

I figured it out. I had an inactive version of PithHelmet (due to
incompatibility with Safari 3.0). After I completely uninstalled the
whole package, I was able to close windows.

I guess "inactive" didn't rule it out after all.

First of all, it was "good" to see someone else confirm the problem I
was experiencing. Thank you just for that. :)

It turns out that the actual culprit was:

/Library -> Application Support -> SPMBL -> Plugins -> taboo.bundle

Deleting it solved my problem.

However, as PithHelmet is not working (and you are so informed each
time Safari starts), there is no harm in removing pithhelmet.bundle
too, which is in the same folder.
Mike Rosenberg - 16 Jun 2007 14:44 GMT

You are?  I'm not.  After various 1.3 and 2.0 updates, when the Safari
build number exceeded the limit PithHelmet had specified in its
Info.plist, I _was_ informed that PithHelmet was not loaded, but with
Safari 3.0 Pithhelmet simply does not load for me, no message.

True.

I get a message here:

"SIMBL Error: Safari 3.0 (v522.11) has not been tested with the plugin
PithHelmet 2.6.7 (v77). As a precaution, it has not been loaded. Please
contact the plugin developer for further information."

Yep, that's the message I remember from previous Safari updates, but for
some reason I'm not getting it now.  Nor does hacking PithHelmet's
Info.plist to set build 523 as the maximum have any effect.  If you feel
like trying that and reporting back on what happens...

Not today... SWMBO and daughter are coming back from NYC tonight and
son & I have some *cleaning* to do.

Good news, though. It sounds like SWMBO made the Jeopardy contestant
pool for next year. They have a pool of 1400 people and call about 400.

Too Kewl!

I had a plugin called "Taboo" in \application support\simbl\plugins
that i removed.
now works fine.

I was getting the "SIMB error" message each time I started Safari. I
also tried editing the PH plist to "523" but that only made Safari
crash. I chose to stay with Safari 3 and deleted pithhelmet.bundle as
well as taboo.bundle.

Please note that taboo's functionality is built into Safari3 (asking
you if you really want to delete multiple tabs).

It warns you if you try to close a window with multiple tabs in it.

There's a "Reset Safari" option under the Safari menu, you could try
that. I haven't really been following all your threads: I assume you've
uninstalled Safari, downloaded a new copy and installed that?
