Parallels 3.0 has been released. It claims to offer 3D graphics and
DirectX support. However, these features do not appear to actually
work. It will not even run Solitaire or any of the other games included
in Vista.

Yah, I noticed that there's very little new (that works) in 3.0. I think
they wanted some money from gullible users; I'll be more careful in the
future. It appears to be a vapor-ware fundraising release. How quickly
nice guys turn into arse-wipes.

I disagree. For me the snapshot feature and its far easier way to handle
hosted system updates is worth the upgrade cost on its own. The
inter-system file associations works, which is very nice too (the PC can
open urls in Safari, jpegs in preview... and vice-versa). etc.
And indeed while not a gamer I did find graphic apps that work now and
not before, with clear mentions (by Parallels) of OpenGL/DirectX, like
EQuake3D.

If you haven't posted your questions on the Parallels tech support
forum, you should certainly do so. I doubt the Parallels development
team monitors this newsgroup.

It appears Warren doesn't actually have any questions - he's already
made up his mind that the good folks at Parallels have become
"arse-wipes" overnight. That's a shame... for Warren.

The DirectX is something like DirectX 8.2. Did
you enable DirectX support (maybe called 3D
support) in the settings for your Guest OS? By
default it is not enabled.

Yes. If you disable DirectX then the Solitaire program will run. Enable
DirectX and it crashes.
Enabling DirectX requires checking the "Enable DirectX" check box in
the Virtual Machine setup. 3D will not work without it.

on my config editor I have a "Enable Intel VT-X support" that was
already checked, but I don't see DirectX??

Works great for me. In fact, I discovered that I can successfully run
Command & Conquer: Tiberium Wars, which has VERY hefty system
requirements and demands DirectX 9, just fine. (I was playing earlier
today).
Note that when you install Parallels 3 and upgrade your existing Windows
VM, you must also run the Parallels tools installer for Windows. If you
do not do this, DirectX will not work. By default it is mapped to a
virtual D drive.

Yeah, did that. The Parallel tools utility shows all features enabled.

My wife runs RealArcade games, and was glad that with 3.0 she can now
run Active-X games.
But one of her favorites still has the same problem it had with
earlier Parallels. The game _Feeding Frenzy_ sort of runs - but the
mouse cursor is not where the game thinks it is. Using the mouse to
move the fish around involves guess work instead of having a cursor we
can see.
She has paid for this game, but people can download a trial version of
the game before buying, if someone else wants to see if they have the
same problem.
I've posted in the Parallels web newsgroup, but nobody has replied.

They work in XP.
I presume that Parallels (just as VMWare Fusion) only support a subset
of DirectX. In the case of VMWare it's only DX8.1 which is only
applicable to windows XP.
In fact I just went to parallel's website and the documentation also
CLEARLY states DirectX8.1 and OpenGL compatibility. This means
3d-accelleration only in Windows XP and older games.
Windows Vista uses DirectX10 which is thereby NOT supported. Perhaps
you ought to read the documention first before complaining.
Cheers

lots of sites having it available for free trial.

In this case, the best solution is to install Bootcamp and run Windows
that way so its native.

Parallels allowed me to install the upgrade version of XP, when
Windows asked for me to show it a full version, I showed it my 95 CD.
At the time, I read that Bootcamp wouldn't let me do this.
