RAW workflow on a budget.

I am the happy owner of a Nikon D80 and am starting to experiment with
RAW, but am not quite sure which software to pick for the workflow and
picture management.

I have:

iPhoto 6
Capture One LE
Photoshop 5 (yes!)
Graphic Converter 4.4.4

What I hope to find is a workflow that makes a quick and not
necessarily perfect conversion of the majority of the photos, but
leaves me with the option of perfecting the ones that are worth it.
Grandparents are more focussed on getting some pictures of their
grandchildren than the tonal accuracy.

I have tried to play a bit with Capture One LE(C1) and iPhoto.

C1 seems very capable, but I think it will take a bit of effort to get
into a routine with.

iPhoto is easy to get started with, but I have not checked out batch
processing, and I got the feeling it was more limited. At present, all
my old jpegs are in iPhoto.

The last version of GC is supposed to do much of this, but I have not
had a go.

Finacially, I am not in a position to upgrade PS, let alone buying
Aperture. Also, my HW right now is a 1.5GHz AluBook with 1GB ram -
planning to get an ext FW disk. I think I could live with the
conversion speed of iPhoto or C1, I have no idea how GC would perform.

In the ideal world, I would use the same tool for converting and and
keeping track of photos, I have to start adding keywords etc...

Your thoughts and experiences?

TIA

Martin

Sorry: "Try the demo."  Lightroom has been out of beta a few months now/.
