Aperture trashed my photos

Despite its claim to be 'non-destructive' the my /user/Pictures/
directory now contains but a single file 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' in
place of the 250Gb of pictures which used to be there.  This 3 days
after installation.

I have backups of most of it, but importing 250Gb of RAW files from DVDs
is no joke.

I am not impressed.

Sorry, but you didn't say what the problem is. "Aperture
Library.aplibrary" is the place /you/ chose to have Aperture store your
photos. You could have chosen to have Aperture leave the photos where
they were. You read that in the manual, right?

Yes, I told aperture to import the pictures referenced.  I created a
subdirectory of /user/Pictures/ for aperture to use.

First of all, it's not a big file. It's a so-called 'package', which
*looks* like a file, but is actually a folder. You can open it and look
inside if you Cmd-click on it and choose 'Show Package Contents'.

Secondly, your images are probably in that package, because *you*
instructed Aperture to do so. You can get them out again by starting
Aperture, selecting all your pictures and then choose 'Relocate
Masters'.

I know its a package.  I browsed it and there is nothing in there but
the few pictures I imported.  Also I now have 250 Gb free on my disk,
when previously I had only 4Gb free.  The lost files are not in the
Trash either.

I never imported all my pictures into aperture, just a few for testing
purposes.

Well, it's obvious that you did *something* wrong. Aperture just doesn't
trash 250 GB of pictures like that. If it did, more people would have
experienced it and all hell would have broken loose a long time ago.

the part that i don't get is how aperture deleted 250 gig of images if
he only imported 'just a few' of them.

That's why I don't think Aperture did any of the deleting. There
probably is a simple explanation, but I don't have it.

Could it be that when you imported the pictures you (inadvertently)
allowed the existing library to be deleted/overwritten?

Perhaps a few minutes with the manual may help you...

We manage our libraries of images using "BIG" Firewire Drives the
images sit in there respective folders and Aperture links directly to
those folders as Libraries, all really quite simple and easily
managed...

Using DVDs is slow cumbersome and prone to damage, they are used by us
to create archive copies of Master Images (to be used only in an
emergency) and you have already discovered they are very slow to work
with..

You obviously have a small hard drive so a rethink is clearly needed on
how you manage your images, your after all using a Pro App so a Pro
outlook and Pro Management is needed and ranting about your errors and
failing's will achieve nothing...

But more secure than external hard drives, unwise to use them for
serious backup.

HD is 500Gb

I believe I said we use DVD's to create an "archive DVD's only to be
used in an emeregency"

Less your OS and all your apps not couting scratch disks and library
uses so rather small for RAW images these days, a standalone firewire
drive of at least 500 GB would be a reasonable starting point, we use
750 Gig D2's..

>  >  Pro, pro, pro - sorry I though anyone could buy this software.

Your quite right anyone can buy Aperture but clearly your clueless on
on how to use it, that determines the difference betwen a pro using any
software and an amatuer who cannot even understand how to correctly
import and manage libraries, hence my reference to reading the manual...

Hope you have managed correctly worked out what you did wrong and are
now able to do the very basic task of importing images correctly or
have you deleted it and reverted to Word???
