Robert Montgomery - 10 May 2007 00:12 GMT In the Finder, under the Apple menu, when I select "Restart", the computer (G4 desktop) won't restart until i quit all or most of my programs.
I'm running OS 10.4.8.

If that's the case, one usually gets a dialog saying that logout was canceled by program xxx, or words to that effect.

Robert Montgomery - 12 May 2007 19:40 GMT >>User-Agent: Unison/1.7.9 >> [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >>> >>>Try upgrading to 10.4.9 to see if that helps. Actually, I AM running 10.4.9; I had forgotten that the system had been automatically upgraded from 10.4.8 recently.

Yes; I've been having a devil of a time with printing recently. Printer Setup Utility keeps stalling and I force quit it but then can't reopen it.
I'm not sure if it's conflicting with the Epson Stylus R2400 driver or what. (Both icons show up in the bar at the bottom of my screen and both are active often simultaneously.)
To try to fix the problem I've been trying to restart, but the whole computer system would stall even when i tried force quitting the Finder, so I'd pull the plug out of the surge protector.
I just figured out from a prompt message on my screen that it's better to try logging out (under the Apple menu) and then logging in again.
But even that hasn't fixed the Printer Setup Utility problem. I had deleted my Epson Stylus Photo R2400 today from the list of printers in Printer Setup Utility and now the program stalls every time I try to add it back again (by pressing the Add button in Printer Setup Utiilty), forcing me to log out and in again.

It might be worth having a look at "Printer Setup Repair" <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26660>.

I tried that program. It feels draconian and risky, the same way Diskwarrior felt at first, (especially with the serious warning messages in the Help file and the Reset window) but it seems to work.
I used Printer Setup Repair to back up my printer settings. Then i reset the printer settings, restarted and restored my printer settings, and now I'm able to open Printer Setup Utlitity and print again (for now, anyway.)
The program's Help file says that there's a gap in Disk Utility's Disk premissions verification and repair function that's filled by Printer Setup Repair, so this an obvious project to prompt the development of OS 10.5. I hope the Apple developers are working on this. I shouldn't have to use and buy a third party program to be able to print on my Mac – especially not in this advanced computer age of 2007.
And the program's documentation is poorly written. It's not clear which functions of the program one should prioritize and the sequence of procedures is unclear and illogical.
for example, you're supposed to back up in the Backup and Restore section at the bottom of the screen, then above that do "Reset" and after Reset, go back to the bottom "Backup and Restore" section, so the displayed options are in this sequence: 2, 1 and 3, instead of i, 2 and 3. (That's what happens when they skimp on documentation and design by not hiring professional writers and designers and instead the programmers themselves do the writing and design.)
Anyway, it looks like I'll have to buy that program to try to keep my printing running smoothly because I've been having a plethora of printing problems. I had no idea that so many other people, too, are having trouble printing in OS 10.4_. (The program has been downloaded over 44,000 times from the Fixamac.com Web site.)

What's the first test/repair function to do in Printer Setup Repair when the printer's Utility window won't opne in Printer Setup Utility, or when Printer Setup Utility itself won't open?
I ran Backup, Reset and then Restore in that order, but I wonder if one or more of the other processes would be faster and easier.

Printer Setup Utility doesn't have any preferences, other than the System Preferences, so I would guess the application itself is trashed. Restore it from a backup, or reinstall it using Pacifist.

But soon I again had the same problems of the Printer Setup Utility > Utility window not opening and then not being able to add back printers I had deleted from the printers list and then, after going to the Finder, not being able to get back into Printer Setup Utility until I restarted. (I had to restart; even after logging out I wasn't able to reopen Printer Setup Utility.)

If I were to restore Printer Setup Utility, how would I do that?
Would I trash the one that's problematic and drag a Printer Setup Utility.app from from its Applications/Utilities folder on a back-up drive to replace the one I've trashed?
Thanks, Tom.

Another would be to use "Pacifist" <http://www.versiontracker.com> to extract a fresh copy from your installation disk.

I rarely reboot, but I've noticed that logging out _can_ take several seconds even on a relatively fast machine. How long have you let it sit before deciding it needs a nudge? And if it's more than 10 seconds or so, have you checked the logs to see if there are an messages? Have you experimented with different sets of programs running to see if it might be one thing you use a lot that is canceling the logout?
