The difference between browser performance due to their own
algorithims (and not the routes or servers or website
composition) is something I find it very hard to get excited
about.

So true.  Standards compliance, and how bad markup is handled in quirks
mode is much more important.  For me, an important secondary is how well
the app feels like a native app, and how well it hooks into system-wide
services.
