Transmission (BT) app starts from "zero" after reboot

Start download of large file. After several days, several GBs complete.
Power shuts off and comes back on. Computer reboots.
I start Transmission again.
Download starts over from scratch. I check Preferences and confirm that the
destination folder hasn't changed; it says it's downloading to the same place
that the previous GBs have.

I thought, maybe, that Transmission is simply verifying the
already-downloaded files and once that is done would continue where it left
off. But left overnight, it seems that it is, indeed, it's downloading all
over again.

Is there anything I can do to make it recognize the already-downloaded files?

Thanks,

Defined "download".  FTP or HTTP file requests don't have any notion of
state.  There are download managers that do this sort of thing for you,
however.

Ah, I see.  You are talking about some third-party app called
"Transmission".  Maybe check with the developers of that app?

And that third-party app presumably uses the BitTorrent protocol --
that's how I interpret "(BT)".  So your references to FTP and HTTP are
not apropos.

Well, yes.  Hence, my revised comment.

This must be an issue specific to your setup as I have used
Transmission for some time with no such issue. All my Mac using friends
are also Transmission users and I have not had this issue mentioned by
any of them.

Send an email to the developers and see if they can shine some light.
Also, FYI, a new version was released today that is light years ahead
in terms of feature set and performance.

Having OS X 10.3.9, I'm using the latest version available for 10.3. Support
for Transmission for 10.3 has been dropped in deference to 10.4 versions.

I presume that my problem is not an issue with current versions of the app,
and will use that fact to spur me on to upgrade both OS X and Transmission.

Thanks,
