I am running iTunes 7.1.1 and a Gen 1 512 Mb shuffle. When the update
to 7.1 happened it also wanted to update the Shuffle which I did.
Ever since then the Shuffle won't play the list of podcasts I load (I
use manual updating) in the order I set. That is I move podcasts to
the Shuffle and arrange them in a given order. It shows that in the
iPod window of iTunes but when I eject the Shuffle and play it they
are not in that order. Also if I connect it back to iTunes it shows
this new order NOT the order I had originally arranged.
I have reformatted the Shuffle again, taken it back to factory
defaults and cycled the battery. This has had no effect. I trashed
the iTunes preferences and that also had no effect. Finally I synched
the Shuffle to another machine running the same version of iTunes and
that did work correctly. The podcast order was preserved when I
loaded the Shuffle from that machine.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem ? The problem machine
is a Dual 533Mhz G4 with 768 Mb memory. The machine that works OK is
a 1GHz 12" G4 laptop.

Ah, so it wasn't a matter of the Shuffle's play mode switch being set
to shuffle. ;-)

Hmm, so it's a matter of "works on one machine but not on the other"?
Have you tried reinstalling iTunes on the problem machine?
Otherwise, only thing I can suggest is to use a different program to
sync your Shuffle, like MediaMonkey (which I prefer to iTunes for many
other reasons, anyway).
