Safari Performance Questions

Lately my Safari browser has been performing strangely.  Often the blue
bar that sweeps across the "http" window at the top of the Safari page
does not complete its sweep and locks up.  Also, I am noticing
statements at the bottom of the Safari page saying things like
".......completed 184 out of 191 items",

What is going on here?   Do I need to make any changes to Safari?  Are
these symptoms possibly the result of the web pages that Safari is
trying to load having instructions that Safari is not equipped to
follow?

Your information and advice would be much appreciated.

I have found this to happen on poorly designed web pages. Any site that
has to load 191 items is not using the best web development practices.

Could you list some of the URLs of pages that are displaying this
problem?

Are you trying to access pages that are absurdly big? Is this
with all urls or what?

Have a look in the Windows->Activity (or something like that; I have
a Swedish one) window. It should reveal what's going on.

To me this sounds/looks normal.  It is just telling you how many item,
pics, links, etc have  loaded on that page that is coming up. That is
just Safari as  far as I know.

Two additional points about the problem:

1) These problems do not occur on my PowerBook; they only occur on my
iMac G5.  This would appear to indicate a possible problem with Safari
on the G5.

2) With reference to one of the previous replies, I have the problems
consistently when I contact www.cnn.com.  The problem also occurs on
other sites such as www.washingtonpost.com.

Hope this makes the problem statement clearer.

The first thing to try, if you haven't already, is to empty Safari's
cache, from the Safari menu.  That's often all it takes to clear up
problems like this.  If you've done this already, or if you try now and
it doesn't do the trick, report back and we'll take it from there.

Mike,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have already tried and did not see any
improvement.

Any additional thoughts???

You can consider whether you want to try using the Reset Safari command.
Doing that may fix your problems, but you may not be willing to try it
yet because:

"Resetting Safari erases your browsing history, empties the cache,
clears the Downloads window, and removes cookies. It also removes any
saved names and passwords or other AutoFill text and clears Google
search entries."

You can, instead, go after these individually.

In your home user Library folder (not the main Library at the root level
of the hard drive), open the Safari folder and start deleting its
contents one at a time, making sure you've quit Safari between attempts.
First delete the Icons folder.  That's where favicons, those little
icons you see to the left of some sites' URLs and in the Bookmarks menu,
are stored.  Sometimes deleting those is all it takes, and these are
_NOT_ removed when you clear the cache.

If that doesn't do it, try removing the other items one at time.  You
can just put them on your desktop rather than deleting them so you can
put back any that aren't responsible for your problems.

Mike,

Thank you for your very careful and thorough set of recommendations.
However, I have one question.  The problems that I am having occur BOTH
if I use Safari AND when I use Foxfire.  Given this information, do you
still advice going through the process of deleting the various items
within Safari?

I know this string is a bit confusing, but I have noticed another
"weird" symptom of whatever is my problem.

After working on my iMac for a while I am no longer able to access some
web sites.  When I restart the iMac I can then access the sites.

For example, in three separate instances today after about 30 to 60
minutes of activity on the iMac I have been unable to contact any of
the Google sites.  Then when I  restart the computer I can access the
sites.

At those times when I cannot access the Google sites I cannot gain
access via either Safari or Foxfire.

This is all getting pretty frustrating.  Any additional thoughts???

Are you getting trouble with other sites, simple not very busy
sites? I can give you some if you want. But I won't yet lest I be
accused by all my enemies here of parading my own writings and
trying to gain more attention. <g>

Please Don't top post.

When you loose internet access, try using numeric IP addresses to
access the sites you are having problems with

nslookup google.com
Server:         10.0.1.1
Address:        10.0.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:   google.com
Address: 64.233.187.99
Name:   google.com
Address: 64.233.167.99
Name:   google.com
Address: 72.14.207.99

http://64.233.187.99
http://64.233.167.99
http://72.14.207.99

If this works, then you are having DNS server problems.  Look at
the /etc/resolv.conf file via the terminal.  This should be
listing the DNS servers your systems is currently using.

Check your ISP's web site to see if they list DNS server addresses
and if the /etc/resolv.conf are different then try setting your
IPS's DNS server addresses in System Preferences -> Network ->
TCP/IP.  See if that changes anything.

If you can not find DNS server addresses from your ISP, then do a
google search (when you do have access) looking for open DNS
servers, or public DNS servers, or free DNS servers.

If using numeric IP addresses also does not work, then your
problem is total lack of connection.   In this case you need to
check all the components between you and the internet.   Home
routers, WiFi, cable/dsl modem and all in all your IPS connection.

Select Safari > Empty Cache.. in the menu and restart the program. If
a web page has 191 items in it it can cause the program to slow down
since it is comparing items in the cache.

Clean out your favicon cache.
