Hi, this is not a troll and I'm not looking for a flamewar. I
searched this group for any opinions on RSS newsreaders and all of the
posts were months (if not years) old.
So, what is the current favorites among the group?
I tell you that I've gone through quite a few but I think I've finally
found my favorite. First, the list:
NetNewsWire
NewsFire
Vienna
Pulp Fiction
Shrook
endo
A major requirement for me is an embedded browser. I liked Newsfire,
but found the user interface a little too plain. I liked NetNewsWire
because it has an embedded tabbed browser, but found the interface a
little too cluttered for my taste and I wasn't crazy about the keyboard
shortcuts.
I settled with endo (http://kula.jp/software/endo) because I liked the
interface but it didn't have a browser, so I kept searching.
But I then I came across NewsMac Pro and I think the developer has hit
it right. Clean, simple UI; no extraneous emphasis on eye candy; deep
feature set; intelligent keyboard navigation shortcuts and, YES, a
built-in tabbed browser. Plus embedded Google search. And it plays
podcasts. Plus cleans my bathroom. Woo. (Okay, I made that last one
up.)
The developer, ThinkMac, says they are coming out with a new product to
replace NewsMac Pro before Christmas called NewsLife
(http://www.thinkmac.co.uk/blog/2006/11/thinkmacs-new-winter-collection.html).
So I'll hang on to NewsMac Pro in the meantime.
(I'll miss endo though; it's got some very nice and slick things to
recommend about it but check it out for yourself.)
In the meantime, I'd like to hear other thoughts and comments about
their favorite newsreader and the chaff you've gone through to find it.
Thanks,
Roland Thomas

You might want to take a look at Hogwasher. It's elegant, very intuitive to
use, and rock-stable.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't as clear as I should have been, or I should use
a different terminology.
I'm looking for opinions on RSS newsreaders (or 'aggregators' as
someone else called them), not Usenet clients.
Thanks,
Roland Thomas

I just use Safari for that.

For me newsreader = Usenet and I think of RSS newsreaders as aggregators.
Having said that NetNewsWire rocks!

I like RSS Menu
<http://www.edot-studios.com/webgroups2/index.php?menu_item=212>. It's
clean, simple and doesn't waste time trying to also be a web browser.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

NewsFire got my money. I actually prefer the stories opening in the
background in Safari.
