Audio software for Macs?

I seek freeware or open source software that will allow me to extract
the audio portion of .MOV files, allow me to save the extracted audio in
a variety of formats and also allow fairly precise editing of the sound.

Anyone have any suggestions? TIA.

That ability is built into your computer (QuickTime). You do not need
anything you don't already have.

If you insist upon freeware, I know only of Audacity, but I can't
recommend it. In my experience it's better to pay the small fee and use
Amadeus II. m.

Two such votes for Amadeus.

Well, perhaps it is if you spent the $30 for QT Pro. Not otherwise,
though.

> You do not need anything you don't already have.

So far, I haven't found anything in the mini's included software (iLife
nor QT) that will do what I need.

I tried Audacity. It does something very strange to the audio track, and
it's editing ability is either limited or I can't figure out how to work
it. I tried all the menus and buttons.

Well, I will check out Amadeus, but this is a one-time deal. It seems
extravagant to have to buy software to do it.

The file is a QT movie made on a digital camera. The video section is
useless. The mono audio is the only thing I care about. So far,
GarageBand is the only iLife program that separates the two tracks.
Unfortunately, I can't get GarageBand to export the track in a format
readable by any other audio software. Moreover, GarageBand doesn't let
me edit the track (I need to remove some loud snaps, clicks and cracks
from the background sound).

No, you can access that ability without QT Pro. I don't have QT Pro, and
I can do it. The only thing QT Pro does, as far as I can tell, is turn
on some menu items in QuickTime Player. But you don't need those menu
items in order to do it.

OK I'll bite.  How would I do this using QT?

I don't know how you would do it. I would do it using AppleScript.
AppleScript can access all of QuickTime Player's features - even those
that are not available through menu items to people who not purchased
QuickTime Pro. That's a little-known fact... m.

I believe iMovie will do that. Import the video, then extract the audio
to a separate track, then drag it to the desktop.

Actually, GarageBand does this. Unfortunately, it exports the audio
track in some weird garageband format. I thought it was exporting the
sound as an AAC file, but I can't get it to open with anything but
GarageBand.

I couldn't get iMovie to do much of anything to edit the file.

The other iMovie quirk is that when it imported this 19 megabyte QT
file, the file size grew to over 325 MB. What's up with *that*?

I may be completely way off track here, but isn't ffMPEGx supposed to
be able to do that?

Worth looking into anyway as it's free.

No, but you can Extract Audio (from the Advanced menu or Command-J),
copy the audio to your desktop by dragging it, and then edit the
resulting AIFF file in Audacity.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found someone with a G4 iBook. Her
computer came with a program called "Sound Studio v 2.1" (included on
her system install CDs), which did exactly what I needed. It impressed
me with its ease of use, so I checked online. It is a commercial product
now, and they want $80 for it.

Is that Felt Tip Sound Studio? If so, I've used it for both recording
voice and for editing sound files, and I've been very pleased with it. I
have version 1.5.5 for OS 9.2.2.

Yup, that's it. Took mere minutes to do all the editing I needed and the
file came out so well, I couldn't tell I had edited it at all.

Sound Studio costs $80 these days?  Wow!  Well, I chose Amadeus II over
it back when the price difference was just $5 because I found it to be
far more stable, and now that it's a full $50 less, I see no reason to
even consider SS instead.

My version cost exactly nada, but I like it so much that I'm willing to
make a donation to support the development when I'm able to do so. This
is a great app to have!
