I have Office 2000 (shame on me) running on a newer iBook with 10.4.
Today Word froze, as it sometimes does when I open a new file and begin
typing into it really quickly. So I had to force quit, and I seem to
have lost a file I had created about a half hour before and typed a
great deal of stuff into. Usually when I force quit like this, an
unsaved file will show up upon restarting Word, as a "Recovered" file,
and I just need to re-save and re-name it. This time, nothing came up,
nor did I find any kind of "word work file" in the trash. it's just
disappeared. And I've tried searching using words I know are in the
file, with no luck.
Any ideas? It's an important file.

Select "Go to Folder" in the Finder's "Go" menu, then type "/tmp" in
the field. Poke through there.

Thanks. I tried it and there are just three -- a Norton Anti Virus log
and two "objc-sharing" files that my machine doesn't know how to open.
they *were* created around the time Word froze, but they're just 4k
each...

Unfortunately, I have no other suggestions.

Perhaps you could try this: make sure your spotlight is working
and indexing things as a general thing. Then search for strings
that you can recall in the doc concerned. That may lead to it.
Maybe a long shot because it just may not be saved anywhere at
all...

First off, there is no Office 2000 for the Mac. Do you mean, Office
2004? If so, you should install the updates. Installing the Office 2004
updates is a good way of reducing or eliminating problems with Word
freezing, at least that's been my experience.
As for your missing file, try opening up Spotlight and searching for a
word in the file, but if you haven't installed any of the updates, that
trick won't work because that feature only became available through one
of the updates.
If all else fails, take this as a lesson to save your files often and
also back them up to external storage.
